Italian TV to monitor Scandinavian tie
ROME, June 21 (Reuters) - Italian state broadcaster RAI plans to use extra television cameras to ensure fair play rules in Tuesday's Euro 2004 match between Denmark and Sweden.
Italians fear the Danes and Swedes will secretly agree to draw 2-2, thereby eliminating Italy from the tournament.
'Our intention was to add seven cameras but there wasn't space to set them up,' the director of RAISport, Fabrizio Maffei, was quoted as saying in La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday.
'We have, however, gained two extra camera positions and we'll be setting them up directly behind each goal.'
The Italian national side has already fallen foul of television cameras in the tournament. Playmaker Francesco Totti picked up a three-match ban after being filmed spitting at Denmark's Christian Poulsen during Italy's opening game.
Totti's teammate Gennaro Gattuso last week said he would like to have 50 television cameras focussed on Denmark versus Sweden, 'then we'll see how they behave themselves.'
Sweden and Denmark are top of Group C with four points each. Italy have two and Bulgaria none.
Italians are worried Denmark and Sweden could end up with a draw of 2-2 or more that, assuming Italy beat Bulgaria, would leave all three on five points and knock Italy out on goals scored.
Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni will be forced to make at least two changes to his starting line-up for tomorrow's Group C clash with Bulgaria in Guimaraes.
Captain Fabio Cannavaro and midfielder Gennaro Gattuso both picked up their second yellow cards of the tournament against Sweden and are suspended while playmaker Francesco Totti serves the second game of his three-match ban after spitting at Denmark's Christian Poulsen during Italy's Euro 2004 opener.
Trapattoni is also without Inter Milan midfielder Cristiano Zanetti who has a thigh strain and is doubtful for the quarter-finals, should the Italians progress.
The only consolation for the Azzurri is that striker Christian Vieri has been given the all-clear despite needing painkillers for a knee injury prior to the game against Sweden.
Meanwhile, Denmark have doubts about forwards Ebbe Sand and Dennis Rommedahl for their Scandinavian showdown with Sweden in Porto which will go a long way to deciding Group C.
Sand has missed training since the tough battle with Bulgaria, where he suffered heavy bruising from kicks to the front and back of his legs.
Rommedahl also received some heavy treatment at Braga and suffered hip and thigh injuries. Both players expect to be in the squad, however. If either fail to make it, then Jesper Gronkjaer could make his first start of the tournament.
The Danes have Thomas Helveg, Niclas Jensen, Sand and Jon Dahl Tomasson on one yellow card each
