correct, 4 and 13. this problem was on the final for my number theory class i took a couple of years ago. computers were, of course, not allowed. what i like about it the most is the fact that it can seem incredibly confusing to many people in the sense that it is simply unclear how to proceed with it. out of all the people whom i asked to study this problem, quite a few didn't even know where to start, let alone actually solve it. so i'm glad you were able to find a solution all by yourself. but yeah, a computer would certainly be of great help here because the way we had to do it turned out to be unreasonably arduous. |
This question was part of a set of similar questions my friend challenged me with. If you can't tell, my friends and I are into challenging each other with "hard" problems .
A more difficult problem in the set was phrased in the following way: "given a range [a, b], determine if the following conversation could be held." It was followed by P and S exchanging a string of comments like the one you gave me, but was longer (I believe they exchanged one more set of "I don't know"s).
That was of course meant to be solved by a computer program. If one thinks the original problem is hard to follow, they should try figuring out how to design an algorithm to solve the latter one
If you're up for a REAL challenge, try this:

The May puzzle was a fun challenge, and didn't take too long to solve (my name is of course up there ). The June one is supposedly an open problem, so good luck solving it by tomorrow

and they say dinosaurs eventually evolved from water dwelling animals, such as fish, that lay eggs right?
then they say fish eventually evolved from microbes living in the oceans, and they lay eggs right? wait, no they dont. then how did egg laying ever come about? plants dont lay eggs.
so where in our past has reproduction by laying eggs evolved. and i really dont see how there could be the first birth by an egg, or that in one organism, it suddenly has mutated DNA that instructed it to lay eggs. |
Yeah but the question isn't "what came first the organism or the egg" or even "what came first the animal or the egg". It specifically refers to a chicken, and I'd put money on the statement that the first bird to be identifiable as a chicken came out of an egg.
