I have to completely agree with BOA...we are having the same problem!

Instead of fighting amongst clubs and restricting (Boa-and I had a wicked time trying to get DANNY...THEY GOT HIM...ALL THE POWER TO YOU and I WILL BE THERE)...but other places, aren't as friendly!

We aren't trying to steal them from going to other clubs...we ALL are just trying to make a name for ourselves, HAVE A WICKED VENUE for all of you...the real people who make OUR NITES HAPPEN, and to BRING wicked TALENT with WICKED VIBES and WICKED TUNES!

I would love to see more CITY UNITY, but alas that is not going to happen anytime soon.

That's all there is too it....Heck, I would love to be able to see a DJ play one gig one night, another venue the next night and have the two parties work it out. It happens with Locals all the time, but why the big fuss about BIG DJ's! They are human too...as are all of us!

Like always, PEACE, LOVE and HAPPINESS!
That's all we need!
That's my expensive 2 cents,,,heehee

Styles

I don't know either...I imagine they could sign them to a semi-regular residency that contained a non-competition clause though.

regardless, it's pretty easy for a large club like Guv to say to someone, "sure, go spin for whatever peanuts that party is giving you...you'll never spin here again". Nothing on paper. Try to prove a club won't book you, lol. The club will just say "um, we just don't want them here"

Gah! j/k

What Boa-Redux is saying is disturbingly true. Lets just say that the whole "can't play here again" thing did happen quite recently (not going to name names) and it sucks! It shouldn't happen, a DJ should have the right to play for whoever wants him and (business relationships aside) this shouldn't create controversy. But over the last couple months I've heard rumours and threats fly in equal quantity (from everyone). Lets try and see through some of the BS and please lets wait for the dust to settle. There's no use getting angry over things beyond our control, so just go out there, have fun, give your two cents when appropriate and let the people who work the scene do their thing!

THIS IS about FUN and ENTERTAINMENT remember that!

It has been called the boa blacklist. Essentially, certain DJs that already play for certain clubs are being told by those certain clubs that if they play boa, they cannot return to that certain club.

Do you wonder why some of this city's top locals have not appeared at boa? Do you think it's all because they don't want to play there or they haven't been asked?

There was a LOT of discussion about it on tribe, if you want to read up I suggest searching on there. (keep in mind that, at that time, it was largely speculation and rumors.)

Although we are all about music, the politics involved are not unlike any other industry. Would you permit an employee to go work for a competitor, then return to work for you? (something to think about - I'm not saying I agree with that logic.)

If the DJ's are considered "Contract Workers" and the employers have them sign Non-Disclosure Agreements because they don't want them to share any industry secrets, then I understand completely ---

but this logic shouldn't really apply to this industry.

DJ's provide entertainment -- the club gets their $$ for that one night the DJ's are performing (through booze and door). This is all elementary; we all know this. But If the owners do not intend on booking this person again within the same amount of time they 'wish' the DJ's to refrain from performing at OTHER venues, then why wouldn't they let them go perform somewhere else? They've already made their $$ from them that night. And if they are a respectable club, i'm pretty sure the DJ's would be glad to come back.

The only reason i could see is that if the club owners are a little insecure about their own venue and they think that a DJ would enjoy spinning somewhere else due to better equipment, vibe, etc. and that they might lose them in the future.

If this is the case, then the owners should really re-think their strategies -- like maybe compete with each other to create the better establishment.

I wouldn't call DJs employees persay, as much as a rock band is an "employee" of whatever venue they're playing at. And if the next time they come to wherever it is they're playing and they pick another venue is that wrong?

if this is true, i'm pretty disgusted with guv. they're pretty much screwing the customer over.

instead of making a better service for the customer through competition, they stifle it by using extortion

why? because they know that Boa has a superior club and sound system, and instead of upgrading their services, they're cutting corners.

they know if there was an even playing field and if they didn't upgrade their service that Boa would quickly take over.

I could expect Guv to pull shit like this, but not System. I have been a supporter of System, and was proud to spend my money there at least twice a month, but this news really disgusts me.
