Here in japan it's uncommon to see any public display of affection, even if it's just between friends. However, when Japanese people are not in public places they will joke around and grab eachother in odd places. lol I'm not even joking!

male friends get a handshake type thingy, and really close male friends either get the handhsake/halfhug or full on hug

Around here it's a handshake at best, usually people don't even bother with that either. Norway is a cold country, and I'm not just talking about the temperature.
