Turntables: 2x Stanton STR8-80's are around $430 w/ tax, (you can also pick up a Dual-cdj for $200)
Needles: 2 shure m25c's are around $60 w/ tax
Mixer: Stanton SMX-201 about $70
Headphones: Anything thats pretty Decent for 20-30 dollars at Best Buy
but you still need a mixer and headphones... so you will need about 600 or so

if he can get technics used off of ebay he can probably get ithem for the same price as the stantons AND can possibly get carts with them. even if he hated DJing he could sell them on ebay for what he paid.

i would never recommend $20 headphones from best buy. even if he gets cheaper gear I would only suggest decent headphones with good bass reproduction.

that mixer, from what i remember, has received good reviews as an entry level mixer.

I don't care to get into the vinyl vs cd argument (since I don't care at this point, and 'cause I'm new), but he was just suggesting one CD deck, and I kinda see his point. Most of the CD decks I've been looking at can play CD-Rs, which hold a bunch of tracks, some of the CD decks I've seen (the more expensive ones) even play CD-RWs, meaning I can just use the same CDs over and over and over again for different songs -- making it pretty much a one time fee for music, whereas vinyl is pretty f*ckin expensive. Though I agree I'm gonna go with vinyl initially, it seems like I'd like it more from the advice I've been getting since I joined here (though in all fairness I've been getting alot of good CD-deck advice too, so I'm looking into both).

Yea I agree, I think if I really disliked the turntables I could sell them back for around the same price. Seems like technics are in high demand, especially used ones since new ones are too damned expensive. And some of the auctions I've seen do add cartridges and needles and such with the turntables.

I suppose I'll check out that brand of mixer too, but I figured I'd be willing to spend more on headphones ($50 to $100 or so).

First off, I am not trying to flame you in any way... I was just asking if you kept the receipt, I sometimes don't. JUST A THOUGHT and yes you can pick up something off ebay for about a little more or the same price, search "dual cd dj" or something similar to that. Also, as someone stated before, what are you using to beatmatch?

Your best bet imo would be the Pioneer djm 300

Just make sure the BPM feature stays off. You'll have a solid mixer

Hmmmm, which type of sennheiser? Because that was one of the types I've really been considering, and why were they horrible?

You shouldn't rely on BPM counters.

Yea, thats what I thought he meant, but I wasn't sure if he actually meant there was something wrong with it or what not (aside from relying on the counter rather than your ears). Do you think (if I got that mixer or a similar one with a BPM counter) that I should leave it on initially to help -- or should I just completely not bother with it? I could see either way being good, it could help kind of, but it might hurt later if I get used to using it too much, etc. ? (I'm sure I'll keep it off anyways though).

And is the pioneer DJM 300 really worth it? Isn't it only 2 channeled and not having many effects (which I guess would be okay for a beginner ...but still)? How about a Stanton SMX-301, they're reasonably priced and someone already mentioned them (I think)?

Also something that keeps bothering me, is why don't people use more turntables like the Numark TTX1s or such? It seems like they've got an assload of more features and they're more maneuverable?

I have TTX1s and they're nice, but the BPM counter is useless. I think they have more torque than Tech 12's too.

Again I'll recommend the Vestax PCV-275 (or even 175) mixer. pssl.com

The price of blank cdr's are so cheap, this shouldn't really be much of an issue. If you are looking to get a CD deck that is versitle, look at the Denon S5000. I have no idea what your pricerange is and what others have suggested since I dont feel like reading over 7 pages of bs, but the S5000 can play CDR (maybe CDRW), can play mp3, can even play 2 tracks off the same cd to different outputs.

With all that said, I would make sure you get vinyl to learn on. Anybody can go and push buttons to mix once they learn the basics, but it is much more difficult to learn on cds and all of a sudden be faced w/ vinyl only (not to mention that fact that you would have 0 vinyl).

What is your budget for this anyways?
