its not that simple sure, but the general way is through hormone therapy. The bone structure definitely cannot change and does not. However skin, breasts, facial hair, muscle tone, weight/mass/fat distribution all are effected by hormones.

Other than the fact that collectively, society must do without the financial and other resources which would be used by the procedure that could be put towards other types of procedures. It comes back to the ranking / priority question. If we only have so many dollars / hospital beds / what have you, then choices have to be made as to which procedures are covered by tax dollars and which must unfortuately be funded from private sources.

Personally, I don't think this is an area that the courts should be deciding. Obviously, there are scarce dollars in our health care system and there will be for the forseeable future. It really comes down to a value judgement as to which procedures are more "important" or pressing than others. This is the reason we have elected representatives... to make these calls. If left in the hands of the court, this decision should logically mean that OHIP coverage should be extended to a slew of other procedures which are not currently covered (such as eye exams which has been mentioned).

Who do we want setting health policy in this country? Unelected judges (who obviously will take the interests of minorities into account, yet have no responsibility or accountability as to the spending of tax dollars), or our elected representatives?

At least you understand the actual point i was making instead of the validity of the operation itself which is what other people have been talking about

Why should the tax payers money have to go towards a procedure that is basically similar to cosmetic surgery (yeah yeah, i know what the trannies are going to say -- it's more then that)

Next you'll get women with small breasts all over the country standing up and saying they're feeling depressed and want the government to pay for their boob job, and i'm not even going to touch on how many guys are waiting to be lifted out of their depression by getting a few inches tacked onto the end of their stump.

At some point you gotta accept that you're born a certain gender, and whether or not God made a mistake and gave you a pee pee instead of a wee wee, it's not something that the rest of society should have to foot the bill for.

Agreed.

I totally agree. I just don't think that by publicly funding sex changes a "tyrany of the minority" would result. But, by quashing a special interest group just because they're in the minority, a tyrany of the majority does result.

If there were enough financial resources to fund every special interest it would be great. But there isn't, so priorities need to be made. I'm undecided about whether or not sex changes should be publicly funded.

ShadoWolf, I wasn't trying to make an argument for publicly funding them.

Do you guys think that Hermaphrodites should pay to correct what they feel they should have?? Is that a cosmetic procedure to you all? If you had both genetalia.. would you like it if someone told you that its a costmetic procedure?

Some people sound earily similar to the same people who still think homosexuality is a disaese of the mind. Cant beleive how ignorant people are.

I agree and its fuckn scary. I still cant believe people can still think like that. Wow... it truly defies logic and commen sense to me. How can some of us still be so fuckn blind ??

This is unrelated to the transgender surgery coverage issue, but is related to the sub-discussion that seems to have developed about funding of other services by the gov't...

Beyond all this arguing about whut "should" be coverage on whatever grounds,

There is another ground to leave chiropractic as a government funded program: IT SAVES MONEY

When ppl stop going to Chiropractors bc they dont "want to pay" the fee , where are they gonna go ? Go to their doctor and the hospitals which are FREE... but guess whut ? A doctor giving some patient a prescription of pills costs more (and therefore will cost the system more) and these pills arent even gonna truly "solve" this issue... if something is wrong with ur body, u need to fix the problem, not alleviate the symptom (ie. if u have a messed up back and therefore u have pain...well wouldnt it be wise to try to solve that back problem as opposed to only taking pills to deal with the pain or that temporarily reduce swelling but aren’t truly attacking the cause of the swelling in the fist place ???)

Chiropractors serve a very legitimate need which I feel deserves funding, but beyond that (because we all feel different things “deserve” funding) it is gonna cost the government MORE now that its de-listed. Isn’t that the exact OPPOSITE effect the liberals were hopping to achieve ??

That’s my 2 cents.

So is having a bad back/spine... short of chiropractic treatment, you are stuck with the pains and whatever else comes with it. I know that I won't be visiting my chiropractor as often as I used to now.

And they do pay for nose jobs... as long as the surgery is not purely cosmetic but is done to help you breathe better or something along those lines.

By the way, is there any way I can opt-out of paying taxes? Cuz I don't feel like paying for everyone else's sex-change surgeries, chain-smokers' lung surgeries, skiing accident surgeries and whatnot. And I especially don't feel like contributing to welfare cheques of all these scam artists and free-loaders. And with all the actual money I'd have left (or better yet - not taken away from me), I think I wouldn't complain about paying for my own chiropractic treatments, medicines, dentist's services, etc...

Now, Jay, if you can hook up a deal like that, I'll support you as a candidate for Prime Minister any time of the day or night!
