This brings up a lot of 'bigger picture' questions:

- At what point do you cut off technological advances from furthering life (whereby natural causes/death would otherwise come into play) - how does this affect natural selection? (Easier to answer this at birth time than towards death - since almost everyone wants to live longer)

- Dozens of operations - no guarantee of a 'normal' life - could those same medical resources be used in other areas? Ppl on waiting lists for routine operations / etc.

You know we're judging things from ourpoint of view. I wonder what it would be like to be that child. Think about it, with no outside people to deal with. You are literally a universe unto yourself. Think of the possibilities! There are so many things that will go on in her head that no one will ever no about, and those things could be answers to some of the most daunting questions ever posed. Most likely she will live a sheltered life complicated with medical problems. Not only will she be removed from modern society as an individual, she more than likely has not the capacity to actually observe and make sense of what she sees. Education will be minimal, as her parents will believe that she shouldn't have to go through that as well, and coddle and treat her as a pet, since there is no real personality to make a connection with. she'll never know the meaning of true love, share or gain any sort of insight on humanity or the universe because she will be too preoccupied staring blankly at the television or having Dr. Seuss read to her.
Life long meditation? Now you're just being idealistic from your own point of view. Sadly, this girl has a very limited future and there isn't much anyone can do about it.

I'm against the idea of fixing an error with another mistake. The error is not her deformity, by the way, but the reaction from society. None of these problems belong to the child, but to the people around her. The trauma isn't hers, it's not self-inflicted. Although she'll probably suffer, we all suffer because of something in our lives. Sure, it's a different sorrow, but what makes us think that she'll not be able to cope with the pain. It's non-sense to believe she's emotionally fragile just because she's not like us.

- Natural selection comes to wealth - if you've got the money, your chances of surviving are higher. Doesn't seem much different though from those who lived in fertile lands and those who didn't in ancient times. The ones who had access to food and good water would naturally have advantages, not necessarily being the fittest.

- I reckon the systems are different. I don't know much about the health system, specially in a foreign country, but I don't expect the rules to be the same in an "emergency" (as it's probably labelled) and in a routine operation.

This person is a child now, she doesn't know what world will bring. IMO life starts when your able to feel how the world works.
12-15 is a great age. Am not saying kill all kids below, just saying you will start to know when things CAN hurt or make you happy.

Emotions are very important in life, maybe more than money. But if your going to feel depressed your whole life (and am 1000000000% sure this girl will when she will grow up) it will be more painfull than anything you can imagine. Death would be a joke compared to this pain.

What do you expect? this person won't have a normal life and the fucking parents now that well...yes the parents will love their child forever and ever, but what if they die? and this girl is 40.

Therasa, it's not a narrow minded thing, but it's just how the world is. You know i even think the next generation will be all about looks , money, and succes. And looking like this girl won't get you anywhere.

Yes abort it should beeen from hour 1, it sounds really harsh, but why fucking believe in miracles? This is just torture and using God as an excuse is just trying to make the pain less.....but it wont change a thing and the parents know that.
