My dad was born in Holland. He came here when he was 7. I was raised with a few dutch traditions especially at Christmas and New Years. I can even speak a little bit of dutch which impresses the hell outo f the dutch trance DJs when they come around. I have also been there 3 times.
However, I will never ever consider myself to be dutch. If anyone asks im Canadian. I was not born there, i was not raised there. I don't identify with that culture at all except for a few types of food and a few words and to be honest i know more about latin culture than i do about dutch. (and that doesnt make me latin)
I am 100% Canadian. No that doesnt make me native. That makes me Canadian. I wish others would start identifying themselves like this more. Why is it that Americans, Argentines, Brazilians, Mexicans, South Africans, and just about any other country where white immigrants have settled in the last 300 years are capable of being proud of their heritage yet in Canada it's almost a sin to do so? We often complain that Canada is "cultureless" but what are we doing about it? Promoting other cultures at the expense of your own is hardly the way to go about changing this.
Put me down for 100% Canadian because that is what i am despite what all the politically correct natives rights groups would try and guilt us into believing.
