i dont understand these "modern" women ... you think you're so smart all of a sudden so you start changing the way something that has been done for all these years ... whats next, women wearing suits and men wearing wedding dresses at the weddings ... i find women keeping their last names ridiculous and complicated ... old fashion way or no way, for me at least

i see my serbian brothers and sisters think the same ... i am glad at least we wont have problems with this

That is a dilemma right there! LOL!

Come on, Jay- dont u think she should bend the rules?

In Spain, I believe it goes first name- fathers surname- mothers maiden name. Unless I have it backwards?

Some women just like their last names so much they keep it. Such is not the case for me. I was ready to change it legally to my grandmothers maiden name, til I met Graham. I think I can wait a bit (& save the $ in fees) to become a McCullagh. Tho, part of me feels weird losing my obviously Jewish last name, to an Irish one, and I consider hyphenating, but then I remember how tainted the name is now (an albatross, as my dad would say), & then I think 'good riddance'. Also, I just found out my 32 yr old brother proposed to his girlfriend yesterday- I hope she keeps her last name- no one should take ours.

nat. come on now. your last name is not tainted. you didn't do anything.

jeffrey dahmer did all this bad stuff but there is over 100 listing for dahmer's just in ontario. it doesn't mean anything.

Oh, but it is. I feel sorry for anyone with our last name- related or not. Sam ruined it for everyone. And if they plan for that son of a bitch to be at my brother's wedding, I swear to G-d I will kill him right then and there. It's him or me, & i have every intention of making him miss every good family affair if I can.

Whatever Sam did (which I hope one day you'll tell me)....I feel sorry for him already. You'd better have your family warn him

It's not a question of being "modern and smart". For some of us, the reasons are to preserve the lineage. My last name from heraldry is part of nobility. I would never want to lose something that my own children would be proud of.

Nope...you have it right Nat.
But as a child, I dropped my mothers surname even though my birth certificate carries it. I have luckily never had a problem doing this on my SIN.

I can't wait to take someone else's name.

I hate my last name. I'm not particularly keen on carrying it on through the generations either.

I hate my own last name actually so I can't expect my wife to take it...if anything i'd encourage her not to

The thing is that i'm actually going by my father's last name and my parents have been divorced since i was a little kid...so it almost makes no sense...but either way if I was to marry and my wife wouldn't taky my name (even if it was a good one) I wouldn't make a big fuss out of it, I don't think it's that big of a deal.
