$100 / month for mobile EDGE? Already sounds affordable to me.

I had a Telus cell and Telus landline until recently when the cell contract expired. Telus offered me as a good customer a rather lousy renewal contract, so I cancelled both the Telus cell and landline! And got a $25 Fido contract and Nokia cell, it's been working fine.

I have the unlimited incoming calls package with free evenings/weekends which suits me very well. The Telus cell coverage was a little better in my area but for my daily activities Fido is good, and will be better when Rogers integrates their GSM network with Fido's.

I had the Fido Sony T610 phone with camera, etc, kinda slick but the damn thing locked up on me and I had to remove the battery to fix it - that to me is unacceptable, common problem with that phone apparently, so I switched to the the very basic Nokia 3100 phone which is really better for the standard phone activities.

I'm hoping in a few years VOIP will be really cheap like $5 a month.

So right now I have:
- cell phone for normal communications (Fido GSM)
- cable internet (but no cable TV) (Shaw)
- satellite TV (ExpressVu)

All cool stuff and 30 years ago nobody would have thought we would have these technologies.

BTW Iv'e made good money investing in the companies that create these technologies, Nokia, Qualcomm, Dish Network, Intel, Microsoft, Dell, Apple etc etc. What's going to be the next big thing that can make us rich?

ipv6 in the core is a rarity. To save on ipv4 address', most providers use (internal) RFC 1918 address space.

Although ipv6 has some other niceties such as auto configuration and QoS, in today's world DHCP and QoS in ATM or MPLS networks or layer 3 based Diffserv (ToS bit) is perfectly fine. mmmmm MPLS is sexah!

Any ipv6 device that wants to be on the Internet will eventually need to cross a 6to4 tunneling gateway.

I use a freenet6 tunnel on my router (http://www.freenet6.net/). Many of the techie websites (ie Slashdot) have ipv6 connected webservers serving up their content.

http://slashdot.org.sixxs.org/
http://www.google.com.sixxs.org/

There are some ipv6 IRC servers as well. I might be linking one to ca-efnet as we don't have one yet. We shall see how much time I have...

To get your own ipv6 tunnel:
freenet6: http://www.freenet6.net/

So many friends I know who bought the Motorola V3 has sold it soon after. The price you pay for a slim phone ... it's not really worth it. Why pay 600+ for just a phone without PDA functions?

The Sony Ericsoon P910i is amazing also.

BTW FIdo has UNLIMITED DATA for $50.00 a month. Download as much you can, keep MSN programs running and surf the web as much as you want on your PDA/Phone unit.

I turned on Verichat 13x, each time stayed on for 30 secs and msged 3 ppl ... appearntly I used 509K and without a data plan, this came upto $26.00.

oh, so edge=grps, then i know what it is

but yeah thats nothing like 3g really so anyone knows when there is a 3G network comming to canada? or is there? and as for possible 3g here, are you going with the wcdma or the cdma2000 or both?

I leave my laptop connected through my phone on all day while working sometimes, for email and MSN (when I can't get internet access any other way) .. The $50/month plan is great, works all across North America.

Exactly, most of the time onsite @ customer locations, they have a web proxy to get out and that's it. If MSN doesn't work through the proxy, I can use my phone, and I also use my phone for sending/receiving mail in outlook.
