This is going to be a n00b question:

I download .mp3's and avi/mpeg/vob/iso files. I also play FPS games on occasion.

Is it possible to have an all linux system where I can rip or download dvd movies? Downloading is no problem. I just want to rip dvds or convert and author avi/mpg files.

With windoze genuine advantage I am starting to believe that it's not all that it's cracked up to be if you pardon the pun.

Besides windblows will always be in perpetual beta.

Ripping is no problem, I think. There's a lot of GUIs for doing just that for mplayer. And of course, viewing is no problem either.

FPSs, though - tough luck. I think some of the older ones, especially those from ID, are available for Linux, but don't take my word for it.

As for FPS, I think most of the new big games are actually released for Linux, I'm not 100% sure of this though. They are kinda harder to find than the windows versions of the games though, but I think you can download most of them and buy them that way. Somone who's into gaming could probably tell you some more...

rosegarden is quite awesome, granted it is no cubase but it gets the job done.

I actually prefer to sequence with something different than rosegarden though, what I do is use seq24 for midi sequencing then route the audio into a program called ardour. Ardour is supposed to resemble protools but I have never actually seen protools so I cant be sure how close it gets, it also has many features unique to itself not resembling other programs. Ardour is probably the most pro-like audio program available for linux, you can actually make rosegarden and ardour work together pretty nicely once all the precursor software is in place, supposedly they are planning on adding the ability to midi sequence too, so it could turn into something quite nice.

I think in a couple years a linux-based music production station could present a significant challenge to the windows and mac, but at this point it requires too much computer geekery for common musicians to find it usable.

I have seen some instances of vst's working under WINE and using the JACK interface <-- Never tried this yet)
also If i were to have a spare windoze machine, is it possible to connect both machines together and use the Windoze machine as a standalone synth?
(assume low latentcy audio cards)

I beleive jack includes the ability to sync audio with another computer like that, the MIDI timing might be a bitch to get working though. I know that the 2 popular sequencers (rosegarden and muse) do not yet have the best ability to sync with external midi devices if you are trying to make that computer respond to midi controls. I havent tried to do what your attempting, but maybe one of the mailing list kids will be able to explain it better than I can. There is also a VST wrapper that recently came out which does not require using WINE, but it also does not work with all VST's. I dont really mess with vsts on my machine because I can get by with the native linux synth programs, zynaddsubfx, hydrogen, ams, and stuff like that are enough for me but lotsa people like using their familiar vst plugins, I never really buoght any vsts in the first place so I never had that need.

So yeah, the linux sequencers may be lacking in their ability to control remote midi devices in synch with the rest of the composition, not really because of any problem with linux itself but moreso because nobody has made a program with that capability yet, this will probably change pretty quickly, one of the reasons I don't see linux taking over studios until it grows up a bit more.

Thanks so far for the answers but I forgot to ask one other thing:

I use Sound Forge 7 and was wondering if there is a Linux clone out there of it or maybe Cool Edit perhaps?

EDIT

Never mind I found audacity.

Also found: SUSE LINUX User Guide

Try Audacity...
(that's the only one that I know of) I've used the windows version, it does the job OK,
it won't be as flashy as soundforge, but...

Sometimes you just have to do both Linux and Windows.
