Saw Gabriel and Dresden two weekends ago in Minneapolis using Ableton, and I couldn't really detect a huge difference in capabilities from vinyl or cds. I really don't know how this program works, or what it lets you do exactly, but from a performance standpoint the show was as good as if not better than any I've seen before. But that comes down to track selection and reading the crowd. Knowing what track to play to bring people to their knees or make then put their hands in the air, is something that no program can do for you. So I couldnt give two shits how you make the music come out of the speakers, so long as its good.

Its kind of depressing for me to read these threads, because i just dropped 2 Gs on a turntable set up. Makes it kinda seem like a waste of money, and time to learn how to use em.

To anyone who says it detracts from a DJ's skill... DJing is about, more than anything else, playing music to a crowd. Track selection, knowing what they want to hear, that kind of thing. And the medium they use is up to them (well, except for maybe vinyl if all the predictions that it's gonna die out are true.) Beatmatching is 1) not that hard to do after a lot of practice and 2) not the most important thing for playing to a crowd, although good beatmatching does sound better, unless you slip up quite badly not a lot of people are really gonna notice, not everyone is a DJ.
So yeah, I guess I'm pro-Ableton, it's just another way (with some nice features ) for a DJ to play music to a crowd, and if they can do even more cool shit, effects, whatever, with it then that's a plus.
