As to how the Tripods were buried in the first place, That will remain a mystery. I'm hoping the DVD's special features will have more in depth coverage on the making of the film, And hopefully explaining some of the questions many of us would like answered, For me, What sort of technology do these aliens have that somehow created a rift in the Earth's atmostphere, Which caused the strange lightning storms, Which brought the arival of the aliens to our planet, In the original story, There arival via cylinders from Mars.

That was a tribute to the lead actress of the 1953 version, Silvia Van Buren, who had a cameo in this film too (so I was told. I didn't notice her in it though).
As for the whole tripod malarky, if the aliens came down to earth a million years ago, why the hell didn't they just take over the planet then? Instead of waiting for an intelligent species to evolve and put up a fight...

Both actors from the 1953 version made the cameos, They were right at the end of the movie, They were the grandfather and grandmother standing outside by the door at the house.
Mmmm... I love big robots. I love mass-destruction. And I fucking love how Spielberg didn't cut down on the blood and gore. Great demonstration of how selfish and just plain stupid people can be in desperate situations too. The film should've been an hour longer, with more slaughter/fighting, and a better ending obviously.
