How does all of that work anyway? Do the organisers of the night give you guidelines about how to play based on your time, or is it more just driven by the crowd not being fully into it by 11pm and having to contend with that?

i think its up to the dj's....

its noticable when a dj bangs it out too early
because the crowd will rock it but then tire quickly
will be interesting to see what benny plays this early
in the night...

whether set progression is paramount or not is really up
to the choice of the people who are putting on the night
and who they choose to play and at what times...

So is it more a professional courtesy sort of arrangement, in that if you're on earlier you tend to take it a bit easier to leave the crowd in better condition for the later acts?

not necessarily a professional courtesy..

the people who run the nights generally put people
on at times which suit their style of music..

that way you get specialised prog people or openers
at the start destroying the crowd with their own style
because they are good at it, and love it..

as the night progresses the night builds of course as
they put people on who play more bangin up lifting stuff
that they are specialised at and love..

it builds like a peak.. hence why they call it a
peak time set...

i'm still of the opinion that if you're a good dj, you should be able to play any time slot well, but different dj's are known for their signature styles and we often structure the line-up around that

sezzy im with you. Sure there are a few exceptions, such as strictly hard trance DJs, or strictly progressive DJs, who are billed to play at a normal trance event.... they would either need to be last or first...

but generally your 'trance trance' DJs in Australia tend to be able to play the full spectrum of sounds...... or at least in some way or another, play more than just melodic and uplifting.

So, if we are booked to play first, we play what we love, but we don't play the banging end of what we love. Inversely, if playing later, we play our banging stuff

having said that, when I play... even if the guy before me bangs it out.... I'll usually adapt and play accordingly from where he left off, then carefully progress the set down (or up) to where I want it, then move on from there, especially where musical progression is the main factor of the night, rather than focusing on me as a DJ (or any of the other DJs). However, if its a night that is focusing on the main act, then I think the main act can start off on whatever he wants, regardless of wether its the same speed as the guy before him..... and in those instances, you would expect the support acts to be able to play adequately to match the styles of the special guests etc..

sheesh I can ramble on
