The longer the relationship, the shorter the time it takes to get over it. Over three years, if you weren't meant to be with the person for the rest of your life, you're going to be REALLY tired of them. I was over my first "longer than a year" relationship in like... a week.
A six month relationship, on the other hand, is harder to get past if you haven't yet found several reasons to break up with them. You're left wondering "what if", no matter what, basically.
EDIT: This is my experience, and I'm sure it will piss off the girls, here, but it's the way it works for a lot of guys. Sorry.
