Saw Tiesto up in Seattle and he used mostly vinyl. I also saw Christopher Lawrence in San Luis Obispo and he also used mostly vinyl. A CD or two was mixed in, but vinyl still dominates their sets. I like seeing DJ's spin vinyl mainly because of the legacy and charm vinyl carries with it. When someone says the word "DJ" you immediately think vinyl and turntables. Not to say I "hate" DJ's using CD's and software, but I tend to lean more towards an "instrumental" approach to the music. But hey, if it sounds good I'll love it. Has any of the software DJ's had their software freeze yet? That would be funny. HARDDRIVE FAILURE!! GO HOME CLUBBERS!

what is this Ableton? PC Software and they just mix with mp3's live with this thing? I can understand maybe doing a studio mix with something like that, but not really a live set. Well no, I guess it would be interesting, I just find it hard to believe I could show up to a gig with a laptop and just chill there, screwing with looping and other cool edits.

You are correct, Ableton is PC software that mixes mp3's. It is not, however, "just a laptop". There is other hardware included; see pic below:

That being said, I wish Ableton hadn't been created, but as I understand it, it allows Sasha to obtain tracks long before they hit the mainstream market. For me, however, part of what attracks me to the art of the DJ is the physicality of manipulating records. Moving the record back and forth, beatmatching, yes even scratching, etc, is all very cool to me. I hope it never fully disappears from clubs.

Though Final Scratch is a digital aparatus, it comes closest to capturing the essence of the real thing, and Hawtin and Acquaviva's endorsement, input and feedback, working with the development team during its construction, speaks well the care and quality that went into the thing.

In short, Final Scratch was literally built with vinyl DJs in mind, spurned along and aided by the best vinyl DJs on the planet.

Everything else is built to make ordinary DJ's (you know...the wedding and bar mitzvah kind) lives easier and more automatic.

Ishkur hits the nail on the head once again. This massive digital wave that you see has indeed made lives a lot easier and 'automated' for a lot of DJ's. Although, most vinyl adepts embraced CD because of it's weight, size and portability, a big lot of DJ's embraced it simply because they just wern't skilled enough w/ vinyl and CD decks provided them with the necessary tools to mask their incompetency.
As mentioned, Final Scratch was crafted specifically for vinyl DJ's who just couldn't give up analog for digital. FS found the happy middle so that vinyl DJ's could utilize digital audio via an analog medium that they had honed & perfected their skills on since forever i.e turntables.
I am directly in touch w/ Denon & Vestax and they were over at my company for a presentation about new products that will be distributed in the course of the coming months. I am not authorized to reveal any information about any upcoming products but i'll tell you this much. Denon's R&D is fabricating a MASSIVE range of digital products that shall hit the shelves in the next 8-12 months. Vestax being the wiser of the two, shall push products geared for the ana-digital market. Also, as we all know Vestax was more inclined towards turnablists rather than club DJ's. Expect a lot of products designed for club DJ's as well. Some of you may have tried their first 'J-arm' turntable namely the Vestax PDX-2300MK2Pro. Expect more of the same but w/ digital tweaks.
Where all this is really going is, industry experts are beginning to realize the how vital vinyl has and will be to the DJ elite. Some have wisened up, other's shall jump on the digital band wagon(some already have).Let's see where all this goes.
