I think one of the problems is that people see Islam as a homoegenous mass. If someone comes from an Islamic background, religion becomes the first point of identification, when often the person him/herself feels that they are an Arab, or Turk or whatever above all else, religion just being a small part of their identity. A Lebanese Muslim would probably have more in common with a Christian Greek or Turk than a Nigerian Muslim.
Secondly I think there is nothing inherently extreme abut Islam. There is as much potential for misuse and misinterpretationin Islam as there is in Christianity. Because of various cultural, environmental factors Christianity has evolved and Islam, in many countries, has not.
