Personaly, I think you should have some style when you spin-- put on a show. Show the crowd that you love what you are doing and get them hyped as well. Its dumb when DJs just stand there and let the record (or cd) play out while they stare off into space...

Ehh, awkward. No offense, but there are plenty of djs who work really hard behind the decks. They turn knobs on and off, because their tracks are simply hard to mix and/or don't easily blend with the next, it all depends. Dj's like Richie Hawtin and James Holden do alot of stuff behind the decks and it's visible on their mixes. People like Donald Glaude act...

I'm not really a big fan of Donald Gluade, but I'd rather see a DJ "acting" than just standing there behind the decks like a cardboard cutout.

I will constantly adjust sound levels to enhance the track, often a track that sounds good on one rig will sound shit on another, so its up to the DJ to make the apropriate adjustments using the mixer levels to try and get the best out the tune. Not to mention things you can do using the levels. Im not big on FX as a DJ, I think they are annoying(especially the DJM600 crew) so I will use my levels to make a track sound better at breakdown etc..

We'd all love to play on a Phazon sound system each week but thats not going to happen, so it is up to the DJ to get a feel for the sound in a club and work the mixer to get the best out it.


So to answer your point. DJs who are "trying to look cool" are probably trying to set the mixer levels to make the sound in the cub better. Perhaps you should watch and listen and you may learn how much this can make the difference between a tune sounding good and a tune sounding great...

You are wrong about Dondald Glaude.
when I saw him live, I was at 1 meter from the booth, and he did a lot of stuff.

I saw him Scratching Backwards, without looking at the turntable, and yes the sound was coming out of the speakers, so it was real.

Now if he wants to cheer up people, and entertain them, I don't care, that's just his style.

but he doesn't pretend he is doing something, that is not real.

she's not wearing her headphones... so she can't tell what exactly she's doing if she's trying to play with EQ (there's no change in the playing track).

ARe u kidding me? So many DJs out there pretend to be doing shit. Especially at times, when clearly it's not them that are doing anything, it's just a part of the music.
