I agree with the groupthink that exists...but don't you get the impression that some people here act as if there IS a media conspiracy?
I further feel that some people are implying that media bias is a signicant explanation (excuse) for Harper's inability to lead the Conservatives to power.
Groupthink can be a problem...but then it's the opposition's job to combat that groupthink. More people here seem to be content in crying "media bias" than addressing Harper's shortcomings as party leader.
The double standards are funny. There are those who claim that Liberal supporters are such only because they dislike Harper...yet there are Conservative supporters who don't mention Harper at all in their discussions, they just negatively react to Martin. Isn't this why the Conservatives are failing to win over the people? Because they're spending too much time crying "scandal" and not enough time telling us why we should vote Conservative? Don't tell me it's because the Liberals are crooks...I know what happened. Tell me why I should want Stephen Harper or Jack Layton as PM. |
I wish there WAS a media conspiracy, it would be an easier problem to fix than the groupthink and unconscious bias.
To the extent that people think the media is responsible for the election results - it's obviously not true, if the media had a significant effect on election results then Kerry would have been elected in the U.S. However, the media *did* make Mulroney into a monster, which I think has stuck in the mind of Canadians for many years and is partially, although not completely responsible for the knee-jerk reaction that Canadians have to the image of Conservative leadership.
Anyway, I don't think mass media really has an "opposition", but if it does, it's Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, and look at the flak they get.

Fox News is not any more biased than ABC, NBC, or CBS.
This argument is so tiring. I'm not claiming that Fox News isn't biased, just that you have to be practicing willful blindness not to see the opposite bias on other networks. And you know, I really don't have a problem with bias - it only becomes a problem to me when it's attempted to be passed off as hard objective news.
It seems as though liberals (Canadians especially) place their standard for objectivity quite far left of centre, so Fox News to them looks "extreme" while the CBC looks "just right" or maybe "a tiny bit biased".
Why do you think conservative talk show hosts like Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh get over 20 million listeners a week, while virtually every single liberal talk show host has met with abysmal failure? It's because people who aren't left of centre already KNOW the liberal spin, they get it rammed down their throat every day. Fox News is successful because it puts on a conservative spin.
Anyway, I think the recent portrayal of Harper as kicking off his campaign by diving straight into the gay marriage issue is clear evidence of the media bias in Canada.
