Whenever mainstream media critics talk about media bias, they're always upset that Network A or Newspaper B is biased... Frankly, this is the wrong way to analyze the situation. The better question: Is the media SYSTEMATICALLY biased? Is the media sector as a whole set up so that certain segments of the population are barred from access. In Canada, it is extrememly doubtful that you could prove this is happening.

Take the CBC for example. The right loves to slag the CBC as liberally biased because it refuses to bite the hand the feeds it. How short conservative memories seem to be. Back in the Mulroney era, rarely was something said against the conservatives. The CBC, by some left wing analysts was cited as a key to winning support for the Free Trade Agreement.

In terms of national print media, The National Post is definitely biased towards conservative viewpoints, The Globe and Mail is generally considered centrist (it typically skews conservative on fiscal matters and liberal on social issues), while the Toronto Star is definitely liberally biased. What's the problem here for Conservatives or Liberals alike? They're viewpoints are represented in the national media in a fairly evenhanded manner.

Is the problem local media? Diversity in local media is often lacking because there is only one news source. Nobody can argue that Toronto lacks news diversity when you have a strong local right-wing paper like the Toronto Sun. This however in many small cities this is not the case. This is not the fault of any government policy making, rather it is due to the concentration that is occurring in the media sector. For this you blame the owners of the publishing companies, most of whom tend to favour conservative interests... hmmm, interesting irony.

If the right is so upset about this perceived lack of conservative viewpoint in local news, where is the entrepreneurial spirit that conservatives like to brag about? Form your own newspaper groups... or is there the problem of a lack of conservative readership in Canada?

They're biased towards the Sunshine Girls.

But then, so are we.

Ahahahahaa to think that a person believes themselves to be the judge of what is intelligent is quite amusing to read.

It's quite easy to understand; I didn't like Trudeau.
That doesn't mean my one opinion reflects my whole persona however unless one believes judging books by their cover...

Agreed.
But at least some people give actual support for their arguements when stating an opinion.
It's one thing to spout. It's quite another to try and have a debate over the Internet. As you mentioned; think before hitting that reply button! I can agree with that for sure...

I think it obvious we can agree to disagree at this point.

I further feel that some people are implying that media bias is a signicant explanation (excuse) for Harper's inability to lead the Conservatives to power.

Groupthink can be a problem...but then it's the opposition's job to combat that groupthink. More people here seem to be content in crying "media bias" than addressing Harper's shortcomings as party leader.

The double standards are funny. There are those who claim that Liberal supporters are such only because they dislike Harper...yet there are Conservative supporters who don't mention Harper at all in their discussions, they just negatively react to Martin. Isn't this why the Conservatives are failing to win over the people? Because they're spending too much time crying "scandal" and not enough time telling us why we should vote Conservative? Don't tell me it's because the Liberals are crooks...I know what happened. Tell me why I should want Stephen Harper or Jack Layton as PM.

I wish there WAS a media conspiracy, it would be an easier problem to fix than the groupthink and unconscious bias.

To the extent that people think the media is responsible for the election results - it's obviously not true, if the media had a significant effect on election results then Kerry would have been elected in the U.S. However, the media *did* make Mulroney into a monster, which I think has stuck in the mind of Canadians for many years and is partially, although not completely responsible for the knee-jerk reaction that Canadians have to the image of Conservative leadership.

Anyway, I don't think mass media really has an "opposition", but if it does, it's Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, and look at the flak they get.

She also likes to stick blades into people's back.

Not quite the type of quality I look for in a PM

Fox News is not any more biased than ABC, NBC, or CBS.

This argument is so tiring. I'm not claiming that Fox News isn't biased, just that you have to be practicing willful blindness not to see the opposite bias on other networks. And you know, I really don't have a problem with bias - it only becomes a problem to me when it's attempted to be passed off as hard objective news.

It seems as though liberals (Canadians especially) place their standard for objectivity quite far left of centre, so Fox News to them looks "extreme" while the CBC looks "just right" or maybe "a tiny bit biased".

Why do you think conservative talk show hosts like Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh get over 20 million listeners a week, while virtually every single liberal talk show host has met with abysmal failure? It's because people who aren't left of centre already KNOW the liberal spin, they get it rammed down their throat every day. Fox News is successful because it puts on a conservative spin.

Anyway, I think the recent portrayal of Harper as kicking off his campaign by diving straight into the gay marriage issue is clear evidence of the media bias in Canada.
