I see Nathan Fake in everyone’s tracklist (and charts) these days.. from Liebing to Valentino Kanzyani. A lot of James Holden too.

Mainstream techno DJs are getting softer.

Holden & Nathan Fake produce great music, and they are often featured on techno lineups at various festivals in Europe. I wouldn’t say though that the music is taking over, there is a place for it like anything else. It is certainly forward thinking though, which I think is probably another reason why it has appeal to a lot of techno djs.

As far as mainstream techno djs going soft.. maybe they are trying to be more accessible, and a lot of these guys aren’t getting any younger and have been in the biz for so long, like Barbara, they are bored and want to shift their style a bit. Judging from the bookings though for hard techno in Europe (and I don’t personally consider Valentino or Liebing really for that matter to be ‘hard’ techno, but just ‘techno’) there is still a strong demand and there are fresh names emerging on the scene every day. A lot of the hottest hard techno producers these days are in their early 20s too. The music may not be considered ‘trendy’ but it is still very much alive!

Very much alive yes, but the hard sound does not appeal to as many people as it use to.
Vath spinning Border Community's Extrawelt is a sure sign of that...that's why Cocoon and Border Community are doing so much together now, the DJs compliment each other in their styles.

And I don't think its 'boredom' that is making them shift in their sound, it's the future and they know it

I think it is a combination of both boredom and trying to plan for future careers...Barbara has been spinning the same hard techno, touring so much and playing those crazy high energy sets for 8-10 years now. I get bored of the same music after listening to a CD for an hour, I can't imagine being limited to one sound as a career, I would go crazy. And she is saying she is going a bit crazy, because so many people now expect hard techno of her in certain areas of hte world, but then in other areas, they don't like her hard style! How frustrating...developing a persona that is versatile makes sense. People will get used to it.

Kanzyani and Liebing USED to be considered hard techno, at least on the harder end of the scale when you compare to minimal and the other tech on the scene today. Liebing just did a squelching 6hr live PA with Speedy J in Detroit...that's not hard techno?

I don't think any one sound is going to "take over", but I'm suggesting that DJs who don't diverisify aren't going to find the same career opportunities that they might have had 5 years ago.

Well Liebing for sure used to play harder (and he makes exceptions for certain sets much like Barbara these days.. though his shift doesn’t seem nearly as drastic)… and he still produces some harder stuff.. but using the term ‘hard’ is subjective.. and personally I never would have considered Valentino to be in that category.
Anything compared to sleepy minimal sounds hard though anyway!

As for people not listening to hard techno like they used to… in Montreal.. definitely! (North America probably for that matter) But that can hardly be a global argument, in many countries in South America and Eastern Europe, as examples, the ‘scene’ is a lot fresher there and “hard” techno is very well received.. aside from countries where it still has a big enough following like Germany and Holland.
It is true that there doesn’t seem to be that much innovation in that genre these days, but like everything else these things tend to happen in phases. Meh!

Everything definitely happens in phases...when detroit techno used to be harder it swept North America, now it is groovier and less pounding. The bigger european countries like Germany and Belgium have shifted towards softer techno as the scene has matured, and I think eventually you will see that happen in the areas you mentioned, where the scene is very young and new and fresh (as is the crowd). Some of the pictures I've seen from parties in eastern europe show a mostly teenage and low 20's crowd - but I think as they grow older, if they are going to continue loving electronic music they will shift to softer sounds, as has happened in Germany. I heard the hardest techno of my life in Berlin, but for the most part, the mature, non drug crowd was listening to techno that was a bit more mellow.

Who knows where the state of techno will be in any country in 5 years from now.. certainly not me, I can only make very limited observations on what parties/bookings are happening now and the sets I listen to. Even having been there is not really enough insight to do more than speculate.
