WEBBER FEARS ALONSO WALKOVER
Mark Webber fears that the 2006 season will be a walkover for defending world champion Fernando Alonso.
Renault’s testing pace throughout the winter has been ominous for the Anglo-French team’s rivals, and Webber expects the R26 package to be near-unbeatable in Alonso’s hands.
“I think Fernando is big. I think Alonso will come out of the box,” Webber told the Australian Herald Sun newspaper.
“I always thought last year would be one of the easiest world championships he would have.
“Looking at what I saw this past week [in testing at Barcelona], he might have an even easier one.
“He’s not lacking in confidence at the moment. He drove superbly last year.
“The only thing that puts a little question mark on him is his relationship with Renault.”
Webber believes a superior technical package will also propel Giancarlo Fisichella to new heights.
“I think he will have his best season, partly because Renault will be so dominant and will score a lot of 1-2s in the early part of the year,” he said.
Webber expects Renault’s strongest competition to come from Honda, and in particular Jenson Button.
“I’m expecting Jenson to win races,” he said.
“McLaren might be good in the end – we’ll see. But I don’t think McLaren will be strong in the first part [of the season].”
As regards his own prospects with Williams, Webber admits the switch to Cosworth customer engines and Bridgestone tyres has left the team with a steep technical learning curve.
“We can be a force, but we have a tough phase coming up,” he said.
“We are going all right but we’ve got a bit to do.”
