Id rather for someone who has trouble losing to do gastric bypass then to do some of these cracked out diets out there. Sure its sugery but imo most of those diets are worse on your body long term.

Portion control is key and so is eating every 2.5-3 hrs throughout the day .

Many people need the quick start to weight loss to keep them motivated....unless you have been extremely overweight you cannot understand the psychological issues involved in trying to loose weight. It has nothing to do with being lazy......for a lot of overweight people there is a feeling of not succeeding...especially if you grow up overweight. When you try and try again and don't see results then it just reinforces the thought that you are a failure. I give anyone who is overweight credit for trying to loose weight even if its one of these "cracked out diets".

As for the gastric bypass surgery.....you would rather just see people not being able to eat then to try and teach them proper eating habits. That is such an ass backwards comment for someone who is saying its all about proper eating.

Face it...people who haven't had to loose large amounts of weight cannot understand what is involved.....some people can loose weight by just eating right and exercise....heck.....I know people who eat nothing but fast food and don't exercise and still loose weight. There is no one way to loose weight....you have to find what works for you...I agree proper diet and exercise is key to healthy living but it is not always key to loosing weight.

^^^ Good point. What may work well for some, may not work for others. And there is no blanket regime that will work on everyone. That's probably one of the important steps to losing weight, you have to realize what works best for you and stick with it. And if something you try doesn't work, don't give up, just try something else.
And there will always be critics of diets and programs, etc.

I've never lost a large amount of weight, but I appreciate the motivation, drive and even sacrifice you have to make to feel good about yourself, inside and out.

I always thought walking was useless, since it seemed so inactive. After my summer job last year, in which I would walk about 3-4 kilometers a day over an 8 hour shift, I lost 10-15 pounds, dropping me down to 170. Going back to school over the winter, I didnt want to put the weight back on, so I maintained it by avoiding deep fried foods, and trying not to eat after 8pm.

This was exactly the point i was trying to make...
for most ppl who have struggled with weight their whole lives its not about " being lazy' as most ppl who don't have a weight issue might call it.. its about learned helplessness...meaning that their entire lives they have never seen positive results in their weight and therefore they actually BELIEVE they cannot lose weight..
I'm not saying that this is EVERY single overweight person out there.. and i'm sure there are many ppl with weight issues that are lazy.. but to say that these 'cracked out' diets are just an easy way out is ludicris...these new diets have helped a lot of ppl finally feel good about themselves after what may have been years and years of turmoil.. and although ppl may see these diets as "bad for your health" so is being overweight.. being overweight is probably a lot worse actually...but like i said before.. these ppl using these diets.. and when the diets actually work.. its because they have consulted their doctor first (like the very first post in this thread said) and they have developed a healthy lifestyle plan WITH medical attention as well...which in my opinion is great and i hope that everyone who is using a diet that works or if planning on using one has much success and doesn't give up on themselves!

Nikki

I have been struggling for over a year with changing my eating habits and going to the gym. I'm not lazy! My problem with getting started on the right path is that I wouldn't see results, so I'd get discouraged - and EAT!

This diet is giving me quick results, and has changed my outlook on food... like how much to eat and what's good. I'm way more motivated to keep to my goals now.

The water helped too, tricks you into feeling full. Oh, and the cost.... the diet is expensive ($360/month at the time, don't know what it is now) so the motivation to get to your goal weight and off the diet as fast as possible is pretty high.

I did Bernstein in 2002, and it was $450/month then. I'm sure its closer to $500 (if not more) now. And yes, you lose weight, because you're only eating 400-600 calories a day, which is probably very unhealthy. There's no way you won't lose weight if you're eating that little.
Still, its great that you've been able to keep it off, and made it a lifestyle change.

Right now I'm working w/a personal trainer, and following his diet regimen. It's almost as strict as Bernstein, aside from the fact that I dont have to weigh portions out. I get no fruit, but have more leniency w/veggies, and every morning I have to have some Shredded Wheat (dry or w/hot water) and a whey protein drink (w/water only). I'm at the gym nearly every day, in the beginning, 2x a day (which I should really get back to but I haven't yet). I'm down 20 lbs already, all pure fat. Almost 4 mos. left til the wedding, and I won't stop there.

More than 2 lbs weight loss a week (without exercize) is a near guarantee that it will come back after. I'm following the regimen, and sometimes I have big spurts (4-5 lbs), but we know we're building muscle and only losing the fat, so it should stay off.

Also, for anyone who dreads water (like me)- get some of those Crystal Light travel packs they have out now. They're awesome to add to your 500 mL bottle of water! Costco has a big box available at a good price.

Your body still has to break it down. Pure water is the only way to go!

- exercise 3-5 days a week at moderate activity for about 20-30 mins
- don't eat at least 4 hours before you go to bed, especially carbs
- stay away from snacks such as chips (avg. 500 kcals per 80g bag) and deep fried food or anything that is cooked over and over again on the same oil
- make fresh juice at home if you have a juicer
- stay away from food that has high % of saturated fat and say no to anything that has trans fat
- eat 4-5 times per day, smaller portions, allocate it during your day so you don't eat too much at once
- if you go to a buffet, don't eat the entire fucking buffet!
- if you're going to the gym that day or doing any vigorous activity, don't eat at least 2-3 hours before
- if you consume protein, consume it after exercising
- drink about 2L per day of water
- try to get 7-8 hours of sleep daily and try not to fuck up your sleeping routine often (i know many of us here do this by going out till 8am on the weekends then waking up at 7am monday morning)
- don't take too much ectasy!

As long as you want to achieve the results internally and you get over those barriers that are along the way and dont give up, you should be fine by puting your mind into it!

consult a certified kinesiologist for help if necessary. if anyone has any specific questions, post them up, i'll be glad to help out as long as it is within my field of expertise.

just citric acid + sweeteners but that's not a problem really

as long as crystal light is 0 kcals (no carbs/fat/protein) iz all good. unless you have a problem with sugars!

bernstien is a lifestyle change.... yeah starving yourself with steroid injections..alright...

i said id rather people get gastric bypass as apposed to trying to follow some of those wacky diets out there. NOT do that instead of a lifestyle change.
People want results way to quickly and expect it to happen right away. For some it can but for most it WONT . It takes time and lots of dedication. Doing the exercise is the easy part even if you dont like it. Diet is the hardest part(unless you have a live in cook and nutrionist...like oprah or something).
Ive never been extremely overweight, but its not like i dont know anyone who has been(incl my mom), who did bernstien(among other things). Im fully aware of the psychological issues with trying to lose weight and that some people might have other health reasons which hold them back from losing properly....

fact is most ARE LAZY..want results to quickly and get discouraged when it doesnt happen. Most dont want a lifestyle change. They want to drop the pounds quickly and with minimal effort...and also to keep their old habits and diet. Sorry not gonna work. I may sound harsh but that is the reality. *now that doesnt mean anyone here is lke that* .

Also the goal should be to lose FAT...,not just numbers on the scale. Most of these diets you end up losing fat AND MUSCLE which is dumb in many ways. You want to keep muscle and cut the fat. Sure moral lost 100 lbs in 4 months, but i garauntee you that incl a large percentage of muscle mass.

And a big reason for most not losing over their life time is...they werent doing the right things to begin with.
Its like the skinny kid trying to gain lots of muscle. He says he eats huge, but really he doesnt. *you see this all over body building forums*.

Tiesto4Life laid out a brief and good amt of details to follow. For MOST , eating the proper food(the right AMOUNT of it) , exercising, sleeping right and staying hydrated with water is more then enough to cut the fat. It just takes time!!!
