Wow, I just finished listening to CD 1 and I really dig your sound! It's the first mix I've heard from either of you, and I'm very impressed. I liked the pace of the mix, it fit tonight perfectly. The intro track was nice, but that mix of Light Shine is mint -- that was my favorite track of the Howells GU, and I might even like this remix more. Very chill, but moves just enough to make you bob your head and lay back. Third track was also very nice and relaxed.
Something is wrong with the transition into the fourth track at 20:00. The percussion sounds a bit off or something, and the strong noises of the new track don't mesh with the vocals. It was a bit jarring to me when this track came in. Broke the flow that the first three tracks established.
Though I didn't care for Get There, it did bridge the gap to Summertime fairly well. Very interesting percussion on this track, a nice find.
Track 6 is very nice. More uptempo, but I really dig it. Esp. the vocal samples. I feel like I've heard them before, even though the track isn't familiar. This track sums up the mood of the set very well.
La Luna brings back the percussion a bit, but I feel like it wasn't anything special. It also broke from the relaxed mood a bit, and started to force the beat a bit. A deliberate transition into a more danceable feel?
The EQing was off a bit into the next track I felt. Like someone said before it's much more poppy than before, but I feel like if you're aiming at a transition into a more clubby sound, it could fit. Though I'm not a real fan of it here. The track does have some merit, but not in this set if we're being nitpicky.
The Derek Howell remix is a lot more uplifting than anything before it. Brings back the ethereal mood a little bit, but maintains that new clubby feel as well. This is a logical track to go with here, but I still feel like the mix is having a bit of an identity crisis: does it stay mood-based, or does it hit the dancefloor?
I think Funky Summer answers it. To the floor we go. A good track, but functions as a filler here. And to be honest, I don't know if it's the right filler. The funk backs down into Jupiter, and it makes me feel like Funky Summer could have/should have been left out completely. I think the Howell remix would have flowed into Jupiter just fine.
I effin' LOVE the Hott 22 track. I've heard this tons of times in Masiello and Porter sets, but I still think it could be set down in any set anywhere after any track and still kick ass. Great way to finish an enjoyable mix.
I think you might need to do some thinking about the direction you want the mix to go -- my main critique isn't technical, although there were one or two minor details here or there, but more of mood. I felt like the set started one way and ended somewhere completely different. Which is ok, but for the length of time you devoted to the laid-back chill sound, you probably should have started some progression a bit earlier if you wanted to go clubby. That way the transition could have been more drawn out. Though I suppose beer + planning doesn't work too well... Anyway, just my two cents. I still liked the mix a lot and will doubtless give it some more listens over the next week. And I'm def. going to check out CD 2.
Cheers, and keep up the good work!
