@ DJ Nemisis.. the scene you're describing in Canada has a lot in similar with the scene in India... Though here, its more generic EDM thats suffered, not only trance.

We tried something out 3 years ago... and we've had a lot of success... And now we have regular, but small EDM nights across the country... and some massive ones too..

We started a weekly ground event, branded it... gave it a name.. SUBMERGE, did the marketing around it... and the entire team work as volunteers. The team consists of DJs, their friends.. and people into EDM.

We then launched the website and the forum in December and March this year, respectively... and its doing really well, by local standards... more details are on www.submerge.in

Maybe you and your buddies could try something similar... we started our first night with 30 friends too...

Well, for me I've left trance behind for the most part since I was so unimpressed with the quality of trance releases and shifted towards focussing around progressive, electro, & breaks since they have seemed to be at an all time best. I love pulling out the classics though and the odd tune when I'm playing a place who won't get horrified by a trance track! I'm not as concerned with trance here in this city, as much as I am with matters further upstream where problems lie that trickle down into cities all over the world. More people giving a shit about things that extend beyond their own doorstep would help matters more. I'd be one of the first people to be happy to see trance make a positive surge in a good direction, yet I'd be one of the very last to hold my breath waiting for it!

The quality of the tunes, and the exposure to great tunes have a lot to do with making people interested or excited about the music.

For your forum idea that's not really the key here, since there are already a few forums that people to post on. Many of those posters fail to get their asses out to the nights even though they intend to. Not enough excitement to motivate them to get out the door some of the time. It's that lack of excitement/hype that is a huge part of the problem.

only thing difference from 2006 and 1999 trance is that most original came out around that year and are now just being remixed or sound similar. i don't see trance dead by any means, i feel it's still going and going..

Trance is not dead. Yes a lot of it is boring generic shit IMO but not all. Whenever I get bored with new trance I go right back to my favorite producers -

For good trance check out Son Kite - I don't know if they have anything really recent but songs such as Let Us Be, On Air and Catch are incredible. And if you don't like that and want something a little more in the vein of popular, ASOT sounding stuff, try David West. His songs are so damn fun.

Actually, the forum came last.. just 3 months ago, in fact... to help grow the EDM community here, beyond what we'd managed to do in the past 3 years.

Yes.. HYPE is the key... initially we did EDM events around women bartenders, fluffy decor and free shots.. the music was incidental.. even if we were dead serious about it as DJs.

We gave away tons of free CDs to people who came to these events, and managed to get some media around it as well. The fact that I work here with MTV and used that brand equity to push EDM didn't hurt either.

The key may lie in either altering, or creating a fresh perspective for the music you're trying to promote.. Give the clubbers a quality fun night (that's why they're out in the first place).. and then bring them around to understanding and consuming the music.

The website, contests, discussions & forum simply allow them to consume the music beyond the clubbing experience.

Which brings me to the question... has TA tried to do regular nights anywhere?? ...and link it to its obvoiusly massive database on the forum here?

We do an annual 5 day event in Goa every year... and its helped people who've never even heard the expression "EDM" understand, enjoy and consume the music.

Sykonee I'de class myself as a hard-liner, I'm thinking of moving countries though because I dont know anyone, and I dont think I've ever met anyone around where I live who's been in to trance as much or more than me, this excludes pikeys and pillheads btw.

I find the most freindly understanding "true trance" people hang in the producers forum because I think they love the music enough to want to produce it, and actually have a membership here! ( and we get visits from the big artists - Thrillseekers just posted to say Hi with some samples in there,for example.)

I dont say "trance is the best" I just like it the most out of all the music I've heard and have kept listening since my first Pete Tong essential summer '98 album.
