Apart from recent times, PvD has always had good intro tunes as well as most of Oakies from 99.

The intro to Micah's Rhunsong 8 is crazy as well, and I always enjoy Aaron Slater - Alien To Me (Dub mix). I'm trashed.

I'm half n half on this one. I agree a good opening tune(beatless intro or not) is important to set the tempo and mood, but it's not totally necessary...and if you don't use a proper intro, it doesn't mean 'youre just playing other people's music'...just because you use an intro doesn't differentiate you from others when it actually comes to playing other peoples music, which is what happens 90% of the time while DJing anyways.
A clear and recent example would be Sasha's sets from the earlier half of this year. That Badger-Stop Clock gimmick was a proper intro...but did that deter him from using other people's tracks in his sets? No. Had he not used an intro of any sort, does his DJing merit diminish? No.
Put it this way: an intro of any sort is important, but not necessary. And just because you don't use one doesn't mean your DJing is less legitimate.
