I am just finalising a project at the minute which i will make available online in lofi format soon for criticism. I will post back here soon with it. I dont post anything that I think isnt worthy of getting feedback from a label. Anything i will be posting on here will be of the best of my ability. I dont want any bad reflections on me if you know what i mean by posting unfinished demos that i know wont cut it.

yea i used to post some shite on here. regret it now but i was only starting off producing so i learnt alot from people telling me what was shit and giving me pointers. i think posting shit makes you better, when people rip you apart you release you need to sort it out. haha.
Lol at the last bit, fair point and makes sense . I have been producing dance music for around 9 years now and im 20 years old. I watched other people from every level along the way from the start (the good old dance ejay days, learning how to put loops together) to basic sequencers (FL Studio) and then to professional kit like Acid Pro and never once have I posted a track on a forum because I have seen people slagged to shit over a tune which is obviously shit anyway but they thought different and I know how hard it set them back. Of course, you never heard from them again lol. Sure most new producers you have never heard of even on forums and they come out of nowhere with this new release on a label!
Effectively promo white label is the way to go once you are confident you have what it takes. Let a record label decide if your good enough or not first, they know the score better than even the most dedicated to trance. Being on promo lets dedicated trance fans and possibly some DJs play your track and get feedback on it which the label takes into consideration. Plus once people see a label has already considered you, listeners will view your track more positively from the beginning than some randomer who posts their work on a forum. Most people who listen to peoples work on forums expect it to be shit initially cos youve heard it all before..

its like that on this forum as you will see. when someone who is signed puts a track up everybody says its good even if its shit. haha. so stupid but as ive heard great tracks from people on this wh oarent signed and people have no time for them.
exactly. theres always room for severe criticism when someone isnt signed. I sent a hard trance demo (just the 1) to HardTimez Records just to see what they said even though i knew one demo isnt usually enough for a label to consider you and even on that 1 track they gave me positive feedback but wanted to hear more to get an idea of what im really capable of. Thats the kinda feedback i listen to.

Indeed. Versatility is the key. If you get stuck on producing one genre you won't make a living, especially if you're doing trance since the market is way too crowded as it is.
Versatility is important, but you need to have limited versatility. You have to make the choice, be the master at one, or just good at a bunch. I have narrowed down my choice to just making chill-out/ambient music now and ever since I made that decision I found the quality of my productions has improved because I'm not spending so much time fiddling around with my guitars on rock stuff or spending countless hours looking for a fresh way to do 4/4 trance drum loops without ompa ompa itis. Now, I only concentrate on my synths and making them sound good in a chill-out emotional way.

That's why you need to find stuff that works with each other. Like chillout/ambient is often (though not always) related to trance & prog.
Also, you can succeed by producing just one genre but that doesn't mean you'd have to sound the same every time.

I just got the beatport newsletter, Tiesto has some new releases, his "Tube" EP I think it's called. I am listening to them now, I'm not that impressed. It doesn't inspire me at all. This is Trance? His new tracks are listed under trance. I guess it's true that Trance has taken a turn toward techno. Repititious, simple progressions, cheesey sounding synths. Why don't they just call it something else? If it's not Trance, don't call it that then.
If very few producers are making uplifting trance, it seems like the ones that do will have the market all to themselves. There's got to be some kind of demand for uplifting Trance, even if it's just a few hangers on. Is A&B going to go techno/house too?
