comparing federer and sampras is like comparing babe ruth and hank aaron...two great players reaching their peaks in different eras...no matter how much you can debate it, you'll never come up to a conclusion

so the idiotic idea of forgetting Pete Sampras will NEVER happen, especially when Federer will get constant comparisons to him during the rest of his career as he scoops up major after major

True but if federer ends up winning the french open , game over for sampras' claim as the greatest player ever since federer will probably end up winning more majors than pete.

The one thing i do like about federer is that hes a player with an image that doesnt allow him to be marketed shamelessly as compared to say nadal or roddick. Sampras was always a much better player than agassi was but agassi's image catapulted him to a fan base that i think was bigger than sampras and thats not the way a player should earn respect..

Watching the tv ads prior to the open only hyping up the open as being agassi's last pissed the shit out of me and made me think about how the media today has ruined the term sport itself.

Agassi is a legend no doubt but this is a fucking grand slam with 127 other players and no single individual should take precedence over the tennis no matter how good he is ... if agassi is so famous you could have held a special retirement ceremony for him and covered that shit.

Fuck have the general public really become so stupid today that they let themselves be taken in by all this nonsense ...

agreed...they are very similar though and if federer wins the french he will do something sampras never did.

back on topic: henin-hardenne is playing well and i see her easily making it into the finals against a tired mauresmo/sharapova. as for the men, haas-davydenko should be interesting and despite my love for james blake i want federer to win in 4.

you are right but shouldn't his competition be taken into consideration along with scheduling and longevity amoung other things?

it should come at no surpise that the general public is somewhat stupid and gravitates to the new "pretty" or "wild" thing. how else can we explain the whole anna kournikova thing? essentially she was worthless as a singles player.

events are mostly done to generate revenue so although the media can be annoying the usta is loving every bit of it. this media hopla has put butts in seats, driven people to go to usopen.org and sponsors are happy

I think thats something that will always be against roger but im judging him by his style of play and even though i am a nadal fan, i cant help but admit he is pretty damn good and would be up there even if he was in the game 10 years ago .. but i agree that the fun of watching tennis today is no where close to yesteryear when we had the sampras, agassi, courier, edberg, chang, martin, rafter, ivanisevic etc .. i never liked agassi but watching him retire and effectively ending that generation made me really really upset

the media has effectively taken away a players class as an athlete and players making the most money are the ones who appear the most in magazines and on television and not necessarily the ones with the most championships.. my dad used to own my citys most famous sporting goods store and had to switch over to the apparel business due to very poor sales in 2000 and he told me that its because people today are more interested in buying what a player wears rather than what he plays with

a bit of topic since its a tennis thread but even in football, we have good players today no doubt but you compare them to the players of the 90s and you cant help but notice that football is being portrayed more as a soap opera than a sport a good example being all these players as young as 20 relasing autobiographies with some stupid controversy in it that are being used to help push sales ..

she was the first hottie to put on a short skirt on a tennis court and men are horny .. thats acceptable

Not at all

Federer already did what Sampras has never done: reach the French Open final

we're still comparing him to Pete

He'll win the French Open, but he'll still get comparisons to Pete as he makes a run to break Pete's record

Will Federer end his career with another Grand Slam title?

Comparisons to Pete right there until the end
