50/50??? gunna disagree there.

they may be "fit" to work...as in they have arms and legs a brain, skin, eyes etc. etc....but something has happened to them that has landed them in that place.

MOST people (so not 50%) of homeless people do not wake up one day and put the blue collar/white collar outfit away and say "I am going to begin a career of homelessness".

There are many factors that contribute to homelessness, the desire to be homeless is rarely one of them. I would say that getting out of the begging trade is hard once in (factor in drugs/alocohol) when asking for money becomes litterally the easiet way to make it, but making more money as a homeless person makes me wonder what they were doing before.

It's a tricky situation. A deffinate tough question and matter in debate. Bottom line is that they got there somehow weather it be ( lack of money, kicked out , laziness , etc. ) We'll never really know personally what happened to each and everyone. Some of us may have an idea but it'll never be for sure. So asking yourself, " Should they really be out there begging or are they able to get themselves a job " Is kinda out of the question. I think the younger ones could most likely dig themselves out of thier hole and change thier life around, while older homeless people may not have the oppertunity. But with saying that I do think that there are always options but they choose to overlook them for some reason.

Yup, I probably would too.

I'm usually hesitant to give homeless people cash because you never know how they're going to spend it. But when they ask for food or a drink and being honest I don't mind helping them out.

Generally - I wouldnt. I usually offer and do not like being asked stuff.

Least he wasnt asking for crack

He never asked me for cash, he just needed directions, but i grabbed his hand, went to the bus stop, gave him 2.50 and wished him a good luck.

Yes, i would have too. I was in the same type of situation as you, Sasha. I had bought a day pass for the TTC and had just arrived at my station where a young kid was asking people for a ticket to go home. He seemed scared and i could also tell he had no money on him whatsoever. Since I was where i needed to be already and it was only 4PM i gave him my day pass to use.

My thing is basically if they don't ask me for money, then i'm willing to give them food/coffee/whatever. Plus i could totally use the good karma!

IMO homeless people and people on welfare are quite similar. They want money and do nothing to get it. As long they keep getting the money, they wont stop doing what they are doing.

personally, people on welfare should not be allowed to buy smokes, booze with their money. If ur that poor, u shouldnt be smokin/drinkin

I think the guvernment should create shops and make em do labor work, at minimum salary and provide them with low income housing....at least we get something out of the deal for our tax money. It aint friggen hard to do manual labor.....

For example, my aunt has an orchard....and because people are lazy, she has to get dudes from jamaica to do the harvest. And those guys are paid more than min wage....so f**** lazy people. there are jobs out there.

I dont ditch out money to bums, and prolly never will. Food maybe...

After reading some article about bums in TO, where less than 50% of them would refuse food or make sick excuses so they can get money...those guys deserve to get pissed on and freeze 2 death in the winter.....sorry for being so harsh!

fair enough! The ladybum I bought coffee for somehow managed to wear shitloads of mascara and pink lipstick every day... funny that.

You should try living in the UK (hence why I came to Canada) people on council estates are smoking / drinking / have cars and their kids are wearing $250 Nikes.. does my fucking head in when I was struggling with a mortgage / student debt and wearing $60 runners that were on sale. And no I was not out clubbing back then..

the harsh reality is that people give bums money to make themselves feel better sometimes... not all people. I know the girl who posted this originally and she wouldnt hurt a fly.. (has her own mini-zoo at home)
I await the onslaught from bum-friendly people.. lol
