Just wanted to add my 2 cents in here. If you realistically are giving up your car remember that the Go transit is another alternative to get you around town, especially the outer areas. It's a lot cleaner and honestly the people that take it are a lot less scary than the TTC folk. It's a bit more expensive but well worth it if it's convenient and will save you time.

Also, if you ever need a car there are always weekend specials too for renting a car. We did that for a bit when we were between cities and then settled on our gas guzzler which I wouldn't give up for anything. I didn't really drive until I was 25 and have absolutely no regrets. You just get used to taking public transit and at least you never have to worry about if you are drinking and driving.

Around Collingwood, I have never really needed to own a vehicle, bc Ive always in the past been able to bike anywhere or walk, and simply got used to walking most the time. I could usually borrow my mom's van if I really needed a vehicle for some reason around town. And Ive always had friends up here that do drive, so if ever we wanted to go mall shopping or check a movie in Barrie or whatever, one of them was always up for it.

Not owning a vehicle in Cwood wasnt a big deal at all for me.

When I lived in Waterloo, I bused everywhere or walked. I got used to it quickly.

For 3 years Ive freakin Greyhound'ed it to TO and back every weekend that I'd come down - now THAT truly was a pain in my ass... 3 hours getting down there, and looking at like 4+ to get back home Sunday afternoon/night. And it would cost me $70-$75 for a damn round trip for the weekend! I DONT for a second regret having to deal w/ this process. I simply live to far away from the city, and thus Greyhound was my only choice.

Now that I own my own Toyota, god, I cant imagine not having this freedom, its wonderful, but I can see where you're coming from certianly. $1,000 bones a month is A LOT. My vehicle being new, I dont have the repairs costs that must be costing u a fortune, same w/ the insurance :S

I can tell you, I only recently bought a car bc I turned 25 and my insurance rates dropped by over 1/2! I wasnt willing to own a car and pay the rates I would have had to before I turned 25.

Sad to hear you'll hafta get rid of your car Jeff. I cant imagine doing that now myself.

What I said still stands. Regardless of the ways girls get to go places...

Picture your typical young guy (20-25y)

A. if he lives at home. Then:
* to be social, he needs to get places (fast)
* to have a girlfriend, to go out with her, to do something, he probably needs to drive
* getting to work _may_ require a car
... on and on - bonus if a guy gets to use parents' car. otherwise shit out of luck.

B. if he lives by himself.
* everything I've mentioned above, and in addition:
* get around to get groceries
* go to the dentist
* go to a clinic (if need be)
* go shopping for _anything at all_
and that's in addition to NOT being able to use parents' car...

Any way you put it, getting around Toronto is HARD if you don't have a car, and don't live downtown.

EDIT: don't know how it is for girls.. probably pretty much the same. BUT it is expected that the man picks up a girl and drops her off, not the other way around.

If you live and work downtown then having a car is an option (especially with zipcars) but you are commuting to the airport...DON'T DO IT.
