i have a passat (2001, 1.8 T, manual) with 100,000 miles on it and i haven't had any major problems (aside from those related to me hitting things). i may or may not but another vw for my next car, though it's likely i'll upgrade to a nicer german car.

i hate to side with sly, i have a manual and i loved up until i got a job where i have to drive in stop and go traffic every day. on the plus side my clutch leg is quite muscular

VW's are a bitch to maintain, in terms of parts and service, if you live in North America. Moongoose, your comments don't really apply, as most of the North american and European vehicles are engineered for their respective markets. Further, you point her to a JD power survey that states Porche as first. Ok, look one item down, just below Porche, you'll find Lexus, so I'm not sure what exactly you were driving at. It scored above your paltry Huydai, which IMO are some of the worst cars on the road. Cheap engines, cheap assembly, and cheapo interiors, at least from the few Huydais I've had experience with. I don't know anything about the Tiburon, but maybe that's an exception.
Lexus (and Toyota) consistently score high on quality and reliability ratings. They may not score the BEST, but I'm not sure what exactly your point is to comparing a 100k Porche to a 30-40k lexus. IMO its pretty obvious, as Sly said, where you get the most bang for your buck.

that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. My car is at the shop now getting checked out. the idiot who was helping me was like "does your check engine light come on?" I told him no, he was like "well then I can't know what's wrong with it". I was ready to kick him. I mean, isn't it his job to FIGURE it out?

Dancing Dude Get a second opinion!!!

so you know he's not ripping you off.
you could also call some junkyards and see if they have a used trans.

I actually replaced my friends trans-she came crying to us that her trans was shot and she didn't have the $$ to replace it so we went to the junkyard, bought a used one (damn thing was heavy) and used 4 hydro jacks to lower the old trans down and rais the new trans and bolt it on
