I run into nurses while getting patients from their rooms and such, and I came to a conclusion that the nurses are all miserable. Especially, the older ones. I wondered, "is it a pre-requisite to be miserable in order to be a nurse?"
I literally asked a fellow tech that, and she made a good point. They are simply over-worked. I had also wondered, well why is there always such a need for RNs or RTs....does the job end up being so shitty that it drives people out of the profession? But then I realized, for the same reason nurses are over-worked, that the number of patients keep increasing, and hospitals keep expanding.
So, needless to say, I am still happy in my decision of a career...and we should expect to work hard....but the pay off in the end is quite sweet. |
Yeah the burn-out rate for nurses is extremely high. Gotta think about what we're doing though, and it makes sense. We're taking on these people's pain. Forming relationships with them and their families. We're sort of like living angels. It's emotionally and spiritually draining.
Some are better suited to do it than others...and those are obviously the ones who aren't miserable.
It's pretty much guaranteed that work will come home with me on some occasions. It's an occupational hazard. But that's what I love about my school and the curriculum...they really teach us about the "art" of nursing, so that we'll be prepared for this kind of stuff.
So it's not the job itself that sucks...it's actually very rewarding and fulfilling (for a person like me anyways). It's just the "side effects" of it. But I'll deal with that. Heh.
