LOL!
It's fun to see how passionate both sides get. And truth be told there probably isn't a right or wrong answer.
But there are some inaccurate statements in this thread.
Ferry does actually mix in key, Tiesto on the other hand is a bit hit and miss with this but does do it, but utilises keys in different ways to the others as he uses key changes, but it does make some of his mixes sound a bit clangerous. Good for energy lifts though.
Armin and PVD do it too, and the list is as long as your arm.
Is it important, well the fact that pretty much most of the top 100 DJs in the world do it. They do it differently but will do it in some way or another.
Harmonic mixing isn't stricly mixing with the Camelot system to do mixes that flow smoothly.
In essence, Harmonic mixing is the understanding of music and know what types of energy you can create using it. Doesn't always refer to a long compatible mix of two tracks.
This also has to come hand in hand with the understanding of how to actually read a crowd.
It is fair to say that Harmonic mixing is just a component and not the be all and end all.
With regards to perfect pitch:
There are those who can do it, but the majority who think they can, can not (Most discover this when they take the plunge into key detecting). You can teach yourself but it takes time.
Do clubbers notice:
In my experience the answer is yes, depending on state of mind and awareness. If you drop a clanger then although not all of them do there are a fair few that will, believe it!
We live in a far more DJ conscious society these days.
Gadgets:
With regards to the people who stated that there are so many gadgets like mixmeister and stuff to tweak the keys of tracks...
So fucking what, are you telling me that it's ok to have help with beatmatching but working with keys isn't?
The key matching software is questionable at best and is not to be relied on.
And while you have stuff that matches beats pretty well you still have to know when to actually drop the tune or it may as well not be matched, with keys it's the same, just because you know the key of a track it doesn't mean you know what to do with it.
Don't get me wrong, there are music styles that don't need this as much as trance or prog does. But it still helps.
I can appreciate that it isn't the ultimate answer to making you a Super DJ.
But lets face it, you have specially designed tracks to make you feel a range of emtotions, why shouldn't that apply to how you mix them too?
The bottom line is that it doesn't matter what we think about this as it's the clubbers who decide, we just have to be clever enough to give them what they are looking for.
Cheers
Nem
