Yep. And in Western nations, the cost of actually carrying out the death penalty, and not just for the process, but the cost of appeals and whatnot gets way too expensive than actual cost of life sentence in a prison

Well, depends on whether death of a person has actual meaning for others. For Saddam, there are enough Sunni Iraqis who think he's the shit, so his death means something.
But in other cases, martyrdom is hard to actually come by.

Often people are forced to make decisions that may affect whether a person dies or not, though not necessarily playing a judge. For example, there is one ambulance, but there are 2 patients who are suffering from life threatening injuries. To whom does the dispatcher sent the ambulance?
It's not so black and white to see how others affect each other's lives.
