My point is that harmonic mixing is an obvious improvement. After mixing harmonically it is almost painful to mix without keys in mind.

Just because my post came after yours doesn't mean it was specifically in response to your post. I didn't need your point clarifying - I understood what you were trying to say the first time you posted it. And if i didn't I could have re-read it.....

Smoking - Cancer
Keyed mixing - Non keyed mixing.

Not really any comparison. Not really sure why you used this example.....

My point, if it needs re-iterating, is that mixes from yesteryear still sounded good, despite the fact that they weren't mixed in key. If you want it spelled out: You don't have to mix in key to mix well.

I hope you see the point this time.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as authoritative earlier,

I agree that harmonic mixing is taken too seriously as far as people think that if they are mixing harmonically that it necessarily equals 'good mixing'

what made the earlier mixing good that you are referencing is the sensitivity to details in the tracks and careful matching of music as a feeling and as a sound and not as a theory

that still holds a critical place in good mixing, but I think harmonic mixing, not necessarily as in mixing in the same key or in perfect fifths, but rather what I want to call an active awareness of pitch, interval, and harmonic progression can make mixing very sophisticated.

yes, you should have an idea of the track you think would go well in the next mix. this comes from knowing your tracks very well. which every good dj should. it seems to me that there are a ton of djs that play out and don't know their tracks very well. so, even if you have your cds maked with the keys it will do you no good if you don't know your own music.

so, if you know your music well you should have no poblem churning out good sets without knowing every key of every track you have.

some djs like to write the key of the track on their cds, and some don't. to each his own.

so back on topic, most programs for keying are not perfect. they may help, but it would be more helpful for djs to learn to key tracks themselvs. it would give you a better idea of how music works.

the main thing to keep in mind is be creative. if you always follow the 'rules' of music you may get bored and stop progressing. which is why i stopped going to music theory courses...i'm not too fond of rules.

Harmonic mixing is just a preference, alot of people in here are making it sound like a necessity, its really not, sure it can improve the overall sound of your mixes, but IMO its way too limiting, when looking at what track to mix next, I really don't want to be stuck to a small list each time wondering if its time to change keys, I just go by ear and see if they flow together, simple and it works.
When I am mixing, its not just about making all the sounds blend together smoothly, but what style the next track has and how it is going to effect the overall direction of the music.
Its like a journey from point A to point B, its not about how smoothly you can get there but about what happens along the way.

A lot of the ones who THINK they mix in key by ear are tone deaf as well. Not all of them some are good, but how do you expect someone to develop their ear? It is good to have a little help and some references to guide you along the way. I think the whole point here is that people are keying their own tracks.
