here you can see a map detailing the outline of the tectonic plates on earth. as you can see new zealand is sort of fucked up on the boundary of the australian and the pacific plate. so you could sort of say it is part of australia if you wanted to in that sense the pacific plate is being subducted westwards underneath the australian plate causing volcanic activity and earthquakes. you could say this is tectonic shift, there you go mr renegade

i'm not 100% sure but i think new zealand was never part of the "mainland" of australia, even when we were part of gondwana. i think NZ was still outboard of the mainland, part of a volcanic arc offshore. i could be wrong though

Dj_Es-Dva: not necessarily, because the subducting slab promotes melting in the mantle, which creates volcanic arcs, and eventually depending on movement directions and stuff you can have continent-continent collisions (himalayas) so you could get more NZ!
