Women giving up their jobs when they marry isn't because they're Indian. It's a large, very large country and individual circumstances differ.

My mother chose to take charge of the family and the home.. my wife will make her own choices. Yes, some families do frown upon women working after they get married... and the women who still marry into these families are aware of this.

Other women work straight out of college and carry on having sucessful careers all their lives, even post marraige. Marraige didn't stop our former prime minister from leading our country (as a woman) for several years.

It works for some, it doesn't for others. More and more families in India have 2 earning parents, and India is beginning to see the emergence of a "latch-key" generation of teenagers, as is common in the west.

I'm not entirely sure this is a good thing though.

As defined by the simple fact that women are equals. As such that equality should be manifest in every aspect of culture.

I live in Canada. As a generalized expectation I expect to cook 50% of the meals, do 50% of the laundry, clean 50% of the toilets and drive the kids 50% of the time to cricket.

If I walk back 2 generation gaps (staying within Canada) then it is very unlikely I would have any of those expectations. The fact that India has a long history has no direct bearing on its current location in the evolution of culture. It may be ahead in some areas but...

You are an individual who is ahead of the curve ("my wife will make her own choices." ) but the middle east is not a cultural region that is leading the charge to manifest the equality of women, and as such in that respect it is on the wrong end of the curve.

Which isn't to say that I perceive this as being an expression of misogyny but rather an expression of global culture as a single continuum.

Sure, but what the heck does the Middle East have to do with India?

Not all "cultural evolution" is progressive. American culture has evolved to contain ridiculous body image obsessions and anti-intellectualism. Maybe the Middle East should look forward to the days when they "catch up" with us on those things.

Or maybe the idea of "cultural evolution" should just be dropped in favor of something more unambiguous like increased liberty or better economic conditions.
