I've made some of the best friends I know from the last 4 years in this scene with a lot of them coming from Tranceaddict.

While having never being attacked on these boards, many people who I am close to have had rough experiences. For this reason, i have become alot more withdrawn lately when it comes to posting on these boards.

TA to me now is an outlet to figure out whats going on in the city and to keep in touch with people i have already met on here and respect enough to call my friend.

This is almost inevitable when something gets too big I think. You can't control it or even do anything about it. Sad but true.

Its only a handful but its enough to make the entire pot turn sour.

good post Dave.

and to those who have made the last 4 years an unforgettable experience...ill see you on the dancefloor !!!

Overall, I concur with most that I owe alot to this board and have forged a lot of friendships here which is the essence of an online community.

I do have to say, that more and more I find myself biting my tongue and avoiding engagements in controversial threads because there's no gain from it. There are certain people on this board that do nothing but post downright rude comments that are negative, unintelligent and just plain unnecessary. There are a few people that I cannot recall anything positive ever being posted from them.
Their justification of it is "Well I'm going to give people the straight up me and if they can't take it then that's their problem, cuz I'm an individual that's not afraid to speak their mind!"
This facade is a complete load of shit, because some of the negative garbage and flaming is nothing more than message board bravado- hiding behind a computer to use tough talk. That doesn't make you a breath of fresh air for your honesty, in fact it makes you a rude, disrespectful little sissy, because 90% of the crap some of these people are saying would never be said to the person face to face lest they get their teeth knocked out. And they'd deserve it, frankly.

Bottom line: being honest is refreshing so long as it's done with respect. What makes boards like this great is that we're all different. I like the way many people on this board think, but that doesn't mean I want to THINK like them. We can all agree to disagree and in most cases we do a great job of that.
But hold your words if they're negative, unnecessary, disrespectful or something that you wouldn't have the balls to say to someone's face. Doing the opposite doesn't make you cool and "flaming" isn't an object of pride; it makes you a coward.

I don't want this to come across as some holier than thou rant, or that I'm bitching about the board as a whole I just think certain people need to give their heads a shake and I applaud Sasha for bringing to topic into discussion.

Yea, that was my general idea. I'm not bashing toronto TA's... it's not the intention. Like I said... some people on here are absolutely wicked... some A-HOLES on here absolutely wicked IRL.. but I just don't get why you act a way on here a way you wouldn't act outside in the real world.

I met people in real life that I thought were total dinks on the site. I mean, which one is the real you? Are you some timid person that just acts the way they do in the real world cause their scared to be their trueselves? Or are you acting the way you do on the internet because it's "cool" to be an "individual" who thinks negatively and acts out against the rest.

As for Graham's comment,(sorry for the tardiness of this reply... I thought all the writing about said post was going into the MTL forum, and I wrote it there because I wanted to thank the MTL folks for being the way they were...) but as to your question..

I won't mention names of who I think causes drama or acts out because it doesn't solve anything. Not everyone causes drama with me, I see bashing of people on this site or DJs.. or this person or that person.... it's a generalized statement.

There is no reason to "call out" this guy or that girl. I'm not intending to cause "more drama" and issues between anyone on this site, I don't want it, I really don't. I like going to events, shaking hands, hugging peeps who share this interest, who share this passion.. a love for music that we have that the majority of the world doesn't understand.

I just think, the excuse that "This is the internet, that's how it is" is just as good as "Tiesto sucks, because he sucks." I just think maybe, we can all be a little better then that. I'm far from perfect, I'm a human being and have lashed out a time or two at people on the site.

Was I wrong? Yea man. Totally. I shouldn't have let a site or any comments from anyone on a site get to me.

What I really should wonder though is..

How does it GET to that?

How do I end up (or anyone else) even being THE LEAST BIT BOTHERED by a site that is about MUSIC?

I mean, I never dicussed poker (another love of mine) with another POKER fan and get into a SHOUTING MATCH because I think he's a FUCKING TARD for RAISING with JACK TEN SUITED...

He tells me why he would
I tell him why I wouldn't.

We agree to disagree.

We're both better for it.

Here...

so and so is a dick ass or a fuck face.. or whatever cause they enjoyed a dj, they enjoyed an event.. because they have a difference of opinion whatever the opinion may be.

I just think that we can make this board MORE about MUSIC.. less about nonsense and the amount of GOOD conversation would rise... we'd have MORE POSTERS and LESS POSERS...

There was a period between 1994-1997 where lots of things were written regarding both 'Virtual Reality' and the emergence of online communities + possible side effects. The first year I was in university they offered an elective called 'Virtual Community' - I figured it'd be an easy college course - the class only had 25 students (lol). After that, I became interested in some of the other aspects of this online stuff...

These books are old but the main points raised in them are still relevant today - and probably, even more so.

Negroponte, Nicholas - Being Digital (1995)

Rheingold, Howard - Virtual Community: Homesteading on the Electronic Frontier (1994)

Turkle, Sherry. Life On The Screen - Identity in the Age of the Internet. (Simon & Schuster: 1995)

Well speaking personally, I know I'm way different when people meet me in the clubs than what I am on the boards, but the reason for this is that when I'm in the club, I'm there for music and good times. I'm not there to discuss some fucking drama that happened on TA. Please don't talk to me about it. At that point in time, I don't give a fuck if you agree or disagree with me. If you want to discuss drama on TA, do it on TA.

For the same reason I don't start verbal fights with people in real life when I see them in real life - I *know* they're also there to enjoy the music, so why would I bother them with some bullshit from TA? If me and someone else disagreed in some thread, am I going to bring it up when I see them in the club? Obviously not, cause she/he doesn't go to clubs to have their posting habits criticized by a person they barely know.

Because of that mutual understanding that we are both there to have a good time, I can get along just fine with people I normally don't get along with on TA. (There's also the part about where disagreeing with someone about something shouldn't stand in the way of me getting along with them at all)

My enjoyment of TA stems directly from what is posted here. You can compare TA to being a club where the posts are the music, and the posters are the DJs. Except on TA I get to voice my opinion directly if I think the poster's music sucks. So if I disagree with someone, why should I bite my tongue? There's no better medium for me to voice my disagreeing opinion than right there where the original opinion was stated. Especially if it's some dumbass, ignorant, or attention-seeking garbage.

Lastly, I never expect everyone to see eye-to-eye on every single issue that's discussed on TA. That's just dumb - obviously people are going to disagree with each other. I'm going to disagree with people, people are going to disagree with me. If words like "fag" or "retard" get thrown out in the disagreement, well boo-hoo, tough shit, Nancy. Welcome to the Internet. Just because I disagree with let's say jennypie over the quality of Grindhouse, does it mean I will hold her in contempt when I see her in real life? She has her opinion, I have mine. I'm not going to hate or dislike her in real life just because she disagreed with me on something on TA.

So no, I'm not a different person when I post on TA. My opinions in the real world are exactly the same as my opinions on TA (those who know me well enough know that). There's just a time and a place for everything - clubs are definitely not the place for most conversations, and I don't see the vast majority of TAs in an environment where we can discuss these issues over a cold beer, so it comes out on TA.
