Well, except this one thing....

James Holden, as a live DJ, does suck.

Well yeah, you may have that opinion, but when I saw him, he was fucking on point. Maybe it was because Trainwreck lavelle opened for him, but I thought he was technically pretty damn good and his flow and selection were great. He mixed between Nazitrancefuckoff and MANDY - Jah for like 4 and a half minutes. He had a few slight slips here and there but norhing major for mixing between looped CDJs with a cycloops.

And At The Controls/Balance 005 are testaments to his ability to arrange tracks in an amazing way...

I've heard occasional good reviews, but my ears tell me otherwise - and so do the majority of reviews I've read from others who've seen him.

So I guess count yourself among the lucky ones

That's why I said "live"

PS - Random 'captain obvious' word of advice: If you're going to be involved in any kind of music/entertainment scene, prepare for phoniness en mass. It's life, oh well.

The contradiction, though, is that he's not even being honest with himself. He spent the entire interview trying to convince the interviewer that he was the one who made minimal, but he hasn't gotten the credit for it. Sure, he's not wallowing in anonymity (hell, I've bought a few things he's made before), but he certainly hasn't reached that top-of-the-genre cult status that guys like Richie can now claim, and to say he feels slighted by that is an understatement. He thinks he should be bigger than Minus and the rest of the scene, but he's not, and he's completely bitter about the whole thing. Before you can go out and make wild statements blatantly insulting the abilities of other artists, at the very least, you should admit to yourself just how you actually feel about your own work and your own career. It all wreaks of justifications for what he sees as achievement that fails to live up to what he thinks he deserves.

Granted, the whole EDM "scene" has a strong foundation in respect, non-violence, etc. (think 'plur'), but that doesn't mean artists shouldn't say, "Yeah, I don't like what he's doing."

although i agree in parts and also that im not really a big fan of either oakenfold or jean, im not sure im liking the nastiness and bitchin thats creeping into the whole scene. yeah there is a bit too much ass-kissin but at the same time theres a hell of alot of needless jealousy which is rife at grass-roots level and completely pointless.
as far as punching someone(if true) goes because of a difference of opinion or taste then surely theres a line people shouldnt cross and getting physical over musical differences really is pathetic. then again, id hate to see what goes on when you lot have meetups from here going by the rage on some threads haha

+1

Another thing I spotted was that he was so proud his 'popularity' was not based on hype but rather on his own production work and just a few answers back he said how some of the quotes from his earlier interviews made him famous. What a fucktard.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I found this rather confusing:

I guess there was too much cattiness in this thread

Best part of the interview:

"All haters are is unhappy. It’s that simple. In my experiences in life, I can tell you that. Haters are not happy. You show me somebody who is a hater and happy, I will kiss your ass. Straight up. That is why people say negative things."

+1. Sure maybe he's had a rough road coming through, but who gives a fuck? Like he's the only one? This guy is so smart, he can't even make up a solid opinion on anything. He talks like he's the only one to notice that people in the EDM industry are fake and potentially, could talk shit (lol). I bet PVD was reading a previous interview on that plane and was the one who ignored this guy the whole ride.

Either way, I'd still rather read an interview where the subject is a complete asshole and makes a fool of himself if only to make one point, as opposed to the stock "Respect" response you get 99% of the time from "interview-worthy" DJ's.

Do I think Jay Haze is some awesome guy? Fuck no.

Do I think he makes a fantastic point about just how utterly phoney the dance music scene? You bet your ass I do.

Also, I must have missed the part where he claimed to "create minimal"

Edit: I see what you're referring too now, but still - that just makes him an asshole, and really doesn't render the only part of the interview I thought had a point any less valid.

[it's where he claims he started the big reverb thing and told other artists about it, and they all started doing it 8 years later...just for other people reading]

In any case, yes, I see your point, and yes, controversy can be more entertaining than courteous responses because you get more information about a person raving and ranting than about someone saying "I really respect so-and-so, I really admire what so-and-so did," unless that person goes into his own sort of rant about how grateful he is for the stuff he grew up on, when you hadn't heard a lot of those names. In any case, yes, it's interesting to read. On the other hand, he did just make a total ass of himself, and artists are talking about it. That interview spread like wildfire, and people noticed it--and it's not a "yeah, way to be honest, Jay." It's more like "wtf is up with Jay Haze's crazy ass?"
