Well, the dust from the weekend has finally settled, and I think I'm finally able to find the words to review this party.
I got to This is London at around 9:40 because there was no way I was willing to risk missing out. I waited in line for about 20 mins or so, and after being put in the regular line, the ticket line, the front of the line and then the bottle service line, I think the doorstaff felt a little sorry for us and we ended up being one of the first people in. Well worth the hassle.
Somehow, we ended up downstairs before everyone, and after about 20 minutes of being the only 3 people downstairs, we wondered what was going on and ventured upstairs. It seemed that we had been let downstairs by accident and were now trapped upstairs with everyone else. Oh well. The private party was fun while it lasted...
Manzone & Strong, much like last time they opened for Lawler played an excellent set. Both times they have opened for Lawler now, I have been extremely impressed - something that doesn't happen that often that much anymore. M&S are usually ok or good, but they take it to a whole new level when opening for Lawler.
Barato played a good set as well, although I spent most of the time socializing so I wasn't able to pay too much attention. From what I heard though, it was a good opener, especially towards the end.
By the time Barato was about finished, the place was pretty damn packed and I decided to take refuge upstairs. I kept periodically checking downstairs to see much it had cleared out since I made the mistake of spending too much time upstairs on NYD during his set. I made a promise not to do the same thing this time around. When it finally reached an acceptable level (which in this case was a lot busier than I'd usually tolerate, but I couldn't stand being upstairs anymore), I decided to make the trek down, even though no one wanted to come with me.
After battling with the crowd all by my lonesome, I decided to make another attempt to bring the crew downstairs, and it finally worked. This is when the party picked it up for me. I think this was around 2.00 or 2.30 or so. Usually I'm able to keep track of time during my reviews, but on this particular night, I spent the entire time parked in the middle of the dancefloor with everyone, talking little, dancing much, and time just flew by.
Lawler's set was like a rollercoaster. There were lower points to make the higher points that much more significant. He just kept building it and building it to points of absolute insanity, where I'd be jumping as high as I could, yelling at the top of my lungs, and high-fiving everyone around me. I had so many of my friends come up to me and tell me that they've never seen me have that much fun, lol.
Lawler's set was everything I wanted it to be. I couldn't have asked for anything more. In fact, if it had been anything more, my head may have well exploded. In the 9 times I've seen Lawler, that was definitely one of the best sets I've heard him play.
The only thing I could have asked more of this party was a crowd that was more into it. I honestly didn't care much though because my friends and I were having our own little party which made everything else meaningless.
Although the party on NYD was better, Lawler's set was way better this time.
3 years ago to that exact date, I saw Lawler for my first time, and now after seeing him his 9th time, on the first night of his new residency, he has proven to me again why he is the king, and why I will do everything I can to see him every time he comes. As far as club nights go, it doesn't get much better than this past Friday for me.
