i wouldn't say any of the AIR MAX lines are hardly functional since they are running inspired sneakers. From the earlier generations to the air bag replacement of foamposite soles to the later generations of Air Max 360 run on air soles, i find to be HIGHLY functional to say the least. So much so that you see the trends FOLLOWED by the likes of New Balance, Puma, Asics, etc.
My only gripe about Nike (Air Max Line) is although they are stylish and comfortable, they are way too heavy for a true 'runners/trainer' sneaker. I prefer Asics Gel Lytes or Nike Tailwinds (Talarias) for running/training. Lifting and working out I wear comfort sneakers that support my ankles like the Air Max 90 which is ultra comfortable and is a mid-high top sneaker thus offering more support to the ankles then most think.
I wouldn't say something isn't functional until you've tried and tested and even then, preference in function depends on the activity you participate in
