The problem is we were all brought up having these systems in place, and we think we wouldn't know what to do without them. Think of in 50 years when our sons and daughters have homeland security raping them of their hard earned money so we can defend against these so called terrorists.

They will probably also think where would I be without the homeland security I would feel so helpless, and not protected.

My two biggest issues this election are fiscal responsibility and a moral foreign policy. That said, Paul is the perfect candidate. However, he equates a moral foreign policy with an almost non-existant one, and that's where I disagree. Where he argues to immediately withdraw from the UN and other foreign global governance institutions... I'd argue to utilize them to a greater degree in an effort to reach out to global consensus on international issues. Instead of rescinding American interests abroad, I think we should rather shift them to becoming global interests abroad.

Paul has me really stuck. I love what he says 95% of the time, but can't stomach the other 5%. So I'm still firmly in Biden's camp in 08. But for a virulent Democrat to even consider a Republican is a minor coup I should think. And Paul's turning a lot of heads in the Democratic party as well.

Though I don't agree with you, I really appreciate your discussion style in this thread. What you're saying makes sense to me, and does make me question where I stand. But in the end, I think the difference is this -- positive liberty and negative liberty. The right, through it's military and censorship policies seeks to constrain liberty. The left, through social welfare programs, seeks to increase the ability of the least well-off citizens to live a life of liberty. I'm not articulating well, but I think the difference is the ends of republicanism/liberalism: common good v. individual self-interest.

I am a common good guy. I believe that government exists as a republican (little r) institution that preserves and promotes the common good, rather than as a liberal (little l) tool to protect one's ability to pursue self-interest. As such, I think social welfare programs, though grossly mismanaged in this country, can be and sometimes are a positive component of government. However, I can easily see how the bloated nature of some of those programs in America would lead one to oppose them altogether.

That said, I agree with Ron Paul in regards to government bureacracy - especially in Education, Defense, and Homeland Security - bigger government does not lead to greater efficiency. Paul is right to point out that the creation of a massive bureacracy to deal with security issues is completely antithetical to actual security. I mean, Hamilton's argument for a strong executive rested largely on these grounds as well - swift action requires the absence of a large bureacratic malaise.

Ron Paul knows exactly what is going on, from the Federal Reserve, 9/11 inside job and everything else in between. This is exactly why they constantly leave him out of polls and do not cover him like the rest in the mass media. (propaganda machine)
