INFECTED MUSHROOM EMBARKS ON GLOBAL TOUR; PSY-TRANCE SUPERSTARS TAKE ROCK-FLAVORED GROOVE FEST TO NEW LEVEL
Enthralling Crowds in U.S., Latin America, Europe and Asia, Famed Electronica Duo
Adds Hard-Rock Guitar, Brazilian Drums, Passionate Vocals, More to Infectious Mix
Infected Mushroom, the kings of the dance subgenre known as psy-trance, have begun a new round of international tour dates – and are demolishing any and all preconceptions about what an electronica concert is supposed to be.
With a dazzling musical assault that incorporates cataclysmic beats, metallic rock guitar, Brazilian drumming and melodic, soulful vocals, Infected Mushroom’s live performances are rapidly becoming the stuff of legend – and a gander at the array of video clips already up on YouTube helps provide an explanation, as the group whips crowds all over the globe into an ecstatic froth. The tour began July 20 in Miami and will conclude with a massive throwdown in Sao Paolo, Brazil, on Dec. 22. Complete dates appear below.
Dubbed “the only true megastars of psy-trance” by DJ magazine (having expanded the Goa trance genre to include a truly psychedelic array of musical styles), Infected Mushroom has played to more than a million people around the globe, headlining such festivals as OMIX in Mexico, Miami’s Ultra Festival, California’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, San Diego Street Scene, L.A.’s Monster Massive, The Virgin Festivals in Toronto and Baltimore, and Sao Paulo’s Tribe – as well as packing venues from Haifa to Los Angeles.
Founders Erez Eisen and Amit Duvdevani (aka Duvdev) – both Israeli natives who’ve relocated to Los Angeles – formed the band in 1997 and took the club scene by storm with their debut disc, The Gathering. But they have continued to ignore genre boundaries at every turn; their latest release, Vicious Delicious, incorporates elements as far afield as flamenco, thrash and hip-hop. The band has also reached beyond the traditional confines of the dance world with wildly adventurous remixes of rock icons The Doors.
Utterly dispensing with the static model of dance-music performance, Duvdev clearly prefers the dynamic role of a rock frontman, swaggering about the stage and wailing soulfully (often joined by throngs of joyful fans); Eisen, meanwhile, brings playful charm to his keyboard antics.
They’re accompanied on their current tour by guitarist Tommy Cunningham, whose amp-melting riffage provides a formidable rock counterpoint, and Brazilian percussionist Rogerio Jardim, who adds irresistibly organic polyrhythms to Infected Mushroom’s fusillade of beats. Acclaimed Israeli guitarist Erez Netz will also join them on selected dates.
As DJ noted of a recent gig, “the pair had a 12,000 San Francisco  crowd gripped in their warp-speed Mushroom cloud. Live metal guitars … acidic tapestries and mind-possessing beats all colliding as Duvdev’s vocals rode the pulsing waves.”
The Mushroom cloud is about to engulf the world. But in this particular instance, that’s cause for celebration.
