harlem and manhattan are the same thing, dear Guess you havent visited much here

My reason for living here is very simple: People think harlem and they automatically think the whole place is gangsta which may be true in some areas, but not all.

I live in the Columbia University area, which means its got great buildings, new condos, views, shops and bars, lots of guards on the streets, a couple blocks from central park, and very close to midtown still (I live 5-10 minutes on the subway to midtown). If you look at my pic below, I live in the upper left corner of central park.

but only a couple blocks from the hood which also has its advantages:

ie: the culture, the cheap(er) food/shops/groceries, and APARTMENTS!!! I pay only $1500 a month, whereas an apartment my size in midtown would easily go for $2000-3500.

Ask jenn about where I live. Its half hood and half college/rich/liberal etc. lol I could kick someones ass while writing a book about it.

Yes but you can't use Harlem or Manhattan to accurate gauge the rest of the U.S.

Its very gangster here in Cleveland. Everyone and their mother does have a gun. The criminals have them, and the common citizen has them because they believe they are well protected by having them. There are a number of documented cases in the last few years where someone has shot a would be robber or intruder because they had a concealed weapon.

However I highly dislike the cops and robbers attitude of Ohio (or "guns and gays" if you will as you have both a significant hard right NRA supporting presence and also a very liberal presence.) The combination of a democratic-lead government in this city which has taxed the hell out of Cleveland and misused funds for decades in combination with the republicans at the federal level who delegate no support to this city whatsoever have led to this city's demise, which has been on an accelerating scale the last few years after an era of some improvement in the late 90s.

I have to say after traveling extensively within this country, it should be called "the united countries of america". Every state and city is practically left to fend for itself. Every state has very different sets of norms and attitudes. Those states and cities which have good demographics and a healthy economy (note NYC, Charlotte, Texas, Carolinas, Phoenix, Seattle, etc) are doing quite well and are fine places to live, even though they have very drastic differences in perceptions and attitudes. Those areas with high crime and a declining economy (note Cleveland, Detroit, Baltimore, Philly accept Center City, and parts of the midwest) I would not want to spend my entire life in.

Much of "Middle America" or the interior of the U.S. I find very unsuitable and depressing. The good ole boy attitude pervades as well as a culture of ignorance, bigotry, guns, over-eating, etc.
Those areas close to the southern border or to the coast are doing much better, although some have crime problems due to rapid population growth rather than a declining economy.
