I agree Clovis. I just have never liked the systemic ignoring of human rights violations. I know we do it with homeless people and stuff, but homeless shelters and private projects help a lot.
Those areas just treat women and children very harshly, and they violate the UN constitution and declaration of human rights that most of the world has ratified and agreed that these things are wrong.
I wasnt trying to turn this into anothe Iraq war thread, its just I head about shocking stuff like this all the time, and its so widespread that it has the Africa feeling to it sometimes where everyone does nothing.
India is an awesome example though. As soon as they educated women in certain prvoinces, infant mortality dropped, avg lifespan increased, people were making more money etc.
There need to be systemic changes and I havent seen the efforts towards that as I have seen in other countries.
Ocal, you goofy looking bastard, talking about how other people look doesnt work when you look like this

To me, Human Rights and the promotion of equal rights for women & men should be our upmost concern in foreign policy. It's what democracy is built on, how do you convince people women should vote when the prevailing view is that they should be kept in the dark? We need to push hard in that direction to effect change, and to help folks in those countries who are struggling for it and give them all the help they can get. The moderates in Pakistan have an enormous struggle right now, against not only Musharraf, but also the religious fanatics that have been gaining steam from his horrible economic policies. His presidency hangs from a thread, and if there is some kind of event in which he loses power, the vacuum will be filled by either, the extremists, or the moderates, but the former is gaining much popularity, especially among the uneducated. (for obvious reasons)
