As a result I am willing to accept the status quo until such time as ammending the constitution is possible. While I understand your point regarding "fairness" I cannot agree with it nor do I see it as the lesser of two evils. The idea of supporting religious education, moreover, segragating children on religious lines using state funds is deplorable IMO. I have to vote my conscious on this one, as I'm sure you will vote yours, and I respect that. |
Of course it's your right - and responsibility - to vote your conscience.
I'm just not sure how special funding for Catholic schools, but no other religious schools, is not a much worse kind of "segregation."
McGuinty doesn't really give a shit about the issue either way. His position is based on the fact that he went to Catholic school, his children go to a Catholic school, and his wife teaches at a Catholic school. He's not saying that public funding of religious schools is a Bad Thing. He's just saying that it should be exclusive to Catholics.
The way I see it, if we're eventually hoping to throw religious school funding out the window, it will be much easier to accomplish in the long term if every religion is getting it. If we try to throw out religious funding for just Catholics, it looks like we're attacking the Christians. If every school is getting it, it looks more like an ordinary budget cut.
