USB has problems over long distances, so it's generally MIDI. Some of the more advanced producers like BT will route the output over ADAT, so there's not much output latency, but of course there's still a 528 million clock cycle delay to the MIDI In. More if the nut is under heavy load at the time.
The right nut houses various utility functions such as SMPTE and Word Clock. It's only needed when producers using less-advanced sequencers than FastTracker have problems synchronizing to the left nut.
