I relish time by myself, so I have definitely gone to a number of movies on my own. Whether it was because no one I knew would want to see it or just because I wanted to, it's just something I've traditionally really enjoyed.

i used to go to movies by myself all the time. when i had my studio downtown, i was about a mile down the street from my favorite movie theater, so on Saturday or Sunday afternoons when i had nothing to do i'd walk down there and see a movie by myself.
as for movies being social events, i think that's kind of bullshit. you sit in the dark and pay attention to a screen in front of you. sure, it's nice to have someone to go with and talk about the movie afterwards, but if i want to be social i'll go out for food or drinks at a restaurant/bar/club/whorehouse.
+1
I have a little movie theater directly across the street from my apartment, and though I haven't fully taken advantage of it yet, I have no problem catching a movie on my own. That way I'm guaranteed to see a movie that I want to see and not something that "the group" can agree to. I used to work in a movie theater, and would sit in on a bunch of movies on my own after I got down with my shift. Not a big deal at all.

Now that I think about it, I should probably go to the movies alone so I can have the large popcorn and the motor oil heart-attack butter all to myself
I's a fucking movie. Why are you eating while watching a movie? FOCUS.

I admit, I went to see a movie alone like twice. I don't think its a social experience necessarily, depends on a movie I guess . Comedy with friends is great, but serious movies require more attention, and other people can be a distraction, especially if someone can't keep their mouth shut

I usually grab a bite before going in. You can drop more on snacks than the ticket itself...another reason I dislike the movies.

The mark up on the food and drinks has to be at least 500%. I'd say more than that.

From what I have been told about several theatres, the theatre, itself, is funded solely on food sales and whatever money that production companies want to supply them with to showcase their films. All ticket revenue goes directly to the production company.
Naturally, many theatres share namesakes with these companies - United Artist Theatres, for example - and so might get a cut off of ticket sales in a roundabout way, but there is a reason why food prices are so high at the counters there.

Haha yeah, its outrageous... and to top it off, it seems like they raise the concession prices here at the local AMC theatre 50 cents about every 6 months

Last time i went to the movies i asked them why the prices are outrageous. That's where the theatre makes their money. They get no profit from ticket sales.
