Just got back from the event (well, after a necessary diner stopover).
It was my first event in nyc and I am a little bewildered. I guess you all know each other so you knew where to meet and hang out and stuff. When Paolo came on (1:45 ish) it was pretty ok. I recognized some tracks from his more recent sets but most of it was new to me (i guess house is always more elusive than trance in terms of track recognition, at least for me).
Also, the scene was extremely different from what i'm used to. Maybe it was just me, but the average person there seemed rather disinterested in the DJ/set. Maybe it was just a little sparse. I'm used to everyone facing the DJ, specially when he/she is high profile. Usually, at Guvernment (toronto) it's packed shoulder to shoulder, glowsticks a flowing, same in Montreal (Time, Stereo, Circus, etc.). Also not used to people break dancing in a circle during a house set, but it was cool to see.
It cleared out about 3:30-4 and honestly i think there were more people BEHIND the dj booth than in front (i was 1 of 6 people). I was wearing a black pinstriped shirt, just for reference (if you were wondering who that wierd loner was). I tried to get on stage to give Paolo my phone on which i had written a message (pretty standard in MTL or TO). It just said i'm a big fan and was requesting a miraculous delivery of 1983 (even though i know it clashed with what he was spinning). The bouncer said i needed to know the DJ personally, so i tried to ask around for some of you guys (NYCTAs, but i couldn't...everyone was a friend of a brother's cousin's roomate who went to school with Paolo) he woulnd't even give him the phone...cuz you know, the club was PACKED. Anyway, i was promtly ushered back down. I stayed a bit longer and at one point i was basically the only one dancing in front of the booth. I caught Paolo's attention, and tried to hand gesture "1983" using my fingers (1...9....8.....3). He was totally lost as to what i was trying to do. He called some girl over to help interpret and at one point he made a phone to chin signal, as if I was trying to get his number. He then seemed to come to a realization of what I was trying to say (i.e. 1983 is one of my all-time favourite tracks, great job, etc.), but i'm not sure....i hope he got it.
I waited around half and hour more, got pelted with something on the back of my head and then gave up as it didn't seem to be going anywhere. Anyway, I assume you guys were in the booth (on the stage) cuz there sure as hell wasn't anyone on the floor (even though i asked all three people, who thought i was cracked..."are you a TA?")
Overall i has a good time, although i wish the crowd was a little more robust. How did you guys find the night? What was Paolo's impression (making the assumption that you got to chill with him)?
PS. for those of you considering Resolution @ Bell Centre (MTL) for NYE....GO! I mention this cuz i noticed the thread on your regional board. It's gonna be amazing. I went last year. Setup is sweet. Perfect atmosphere and 21,273 seats to observe from (usually filled with the most rabid hockey fans on the planet). Also the MTL scene is very unique ( in a good way).
