A spokesperson for the al-Qaeda terrorist network has claimed responsibility for the death on Thursday of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

“We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahadeen,” Al-Qaeda’s commander and main spokesperson Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid told Adnkronos International (AKI) in a phone call from an unknown location, speaking in faltering English. Al-Yazid is the main al-Qaeda commander in Afghanistan.

It is believed that the decision to kill Bhutto, who is the leader of the opposition Pakistan People's Party (PPP), was made by al-Qaeda No. 2, the Egyptian doctor, Ayman al-Zawahiri in October.

Death squads were allegedly constituted for the mission and ultimately one cell comprising a defunct Lashkar-i-Jhangvi’s Punjabi volunteer succeeded in killing Bhutto.

Bhutto had just addressed a pre-election rally on Thursday in the garrison town of Rawalpindi when the bomb went off.

She had come to Rawalpindi after finishing a rapid election campaign, ahead of the January polls, in Pakistan's volatile North West Frontier Province (NWFP) where she had talked about a war against terrorism and al-Qaeda.

Reports say at least 15 other people were killed in the attack and several others injured.

As news of Bhutto's death spread throughout the country, there are reports that people have taken to the streets to protest the death of the leader of the PPP, which has the largest support of any party in Pakistan.

In the southern port city of Karachi, Bhutto's hometown, residents reportedly threw stones at cars and burnt tyres.

the whole thing appears to be a bit fishy. For instance, Benazir Bhutto popped her head out of the car unexpectedly. How did the shooter know she was going to do that ? Secondly, why would a suicide bomber shoot first and then explode ? Makes no sense. Also, how would a man on a suicide mission be able to shoot with a steady hand moments before he was about to detonate himself ? Atypical of Al-Qaeda. At least, that's what they said on FOX

It is sad. It is a symbolic death of democracy in Pakistan. She stood for a movement of democracy in the region, the first woman prime minister, and a good woman. Not only did they kill her, but her brothers, and father all execution style. And 22 people total died with her from the blast, not to mention over 100 who died a short while back, a couple months ago, when they tried to kill her with a bomb then. Sick people who will kill for a cause, to keep a culture dead. Yes, it is sad. And even the comments in this forum are sad. Many simply don't care about the world around them.

I didn't mean benoit, there's been way more deaths than that in wrestling in the last few years, some self inflicted, others not so. My point was that a long time ago i posted about a couple of other 'popular' ones dying and half the responses were laughter or something, so it doesn't surprise me that not everyone is in tears about this, something that has less to do with many of us personally.

I got a bad feeling about the Funeral. If you look at live feed pics, there are literally thousands of people gathering, all squashed in together.
Al Queda probably imagined there would be a mass gathering for mourners and planned for something like this. A couple of suicide bombers at this event would kill/maim large numbers.
