I read reviews of movies made on both BD and HDDVD, bit rates are evaluated and quality reviewed. Everytime the quality is the same.

Theorically higher bitrates are better, but in reality we both now that after a certain point its impossible for the human to detect any differences.

to put things into perspective, a very good quality HDTV broadcast on cable goes at 19.6 mbps, hddvd outperforms cable by more than 2 to 1 because of bitrates and better codecs than regular cable.

edit: makes me think about all the fuss about PS3 have superior graphics than xbox360... just to see that they're the same and most of the time better on xbox360 because the games were developped for xbox360 in mind first and then ported to the ps3.

Sony is very strong on hype and BS.

Yes, artifacting is not distinguishable after a certain point. But, it is completely noticeable on TV broadcasts. Not a good example. I definitely see a difference when watching the same programs on Rogers/Bell HD vs the OTA signal direct from the station.

Rogers and videotron compress the signal even more so my 19.6mbps might even be lower for them.

When I watched planet earth over videotron it was spectacular, i can't imagine how it'll look on hddvd.

Yeah, when I watched it on CBC OTA, it was amazing too. That was the day I gave into hi-def.

is this another nail in the coffin for HD-DVD?

quote:

Universal to end HD DVD exclusivity
Tom Magrino
GameSpot UK

Variety reports that Universal Studios has ended its HD DVD exclusivity deal, though it will continue to only support the format until its current arrangement with Toshiba ends 31 May.

The report did not indicate whether Universal will exclusively support Sony's Blu-ray format after that date. Speaking to CNET.co.uk's sister site GameSpot, a Universal Studios representative confirmed that, for the time being, the studio will continue to support HD DVD, though they would not say whether Blu-ray support is also on the agenda.

Last week, Warner Bros shook up the next-gen format war with a seemingly impromptu announcement that it would be abandoning Toshiba's HD DVD high-definition video playback format in favor of Sony's Blu-ray standard beginning in May. The blow to HD DVD was followed by a vicious left hook, when the Financial Times revealed that fellow HD DVD supporter Paramount may capitalise on an out clause in its exclusivity contract with Toshiba that specifically pertained to Warner Bros' defection.

Though the Viacom-owned Paramount officially continues to stand by its HD DVD exclusivity decision -- as does format supporter Microsoft, despite recent reports that Blu-ray support for the Xbox 360 wasn't out of the question -- Universal Studios would be the sole major-studio standard bearer for the HD DVD format. However, it now appears Universal may be readying the haymaker that will down Toshiba's video playback standard for the count.

Sony's Blu-ray high-def video player, which is prominently advertised as one of the primary draws of the PlayStation 3, enjoys the lion's share of support from major motion picture studios. In addition to Warner Bros, the Walt Disney Company, 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate all support the format exclusively. New Line Cinema and HBO, both subsidiaries of Time Warner, also reportedly revealed during the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show that they would follow Warner Bros as Blu-ray exclusive studios.

Hey,
Don't wanna get your hopes down, but keep an eye on how that Samsung player runs... that particular model got some pretty bad reviews! A lot of people are switching to the Sony Blu Ray player as it's ratings and reviews are much better!

Samsung BD-P1400
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pr...581&catid=25323

Sony BDP-S300
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pr...10090334&catid=

click on the 'Customer Reviews' tab and see for yourself
I know every device isnt rated that well as the technology is still fairly new but the reliability of each machine defiantely differs from each brand! and besides, the Sony is on sale this week too :-p. A better player at a cheaper price :-)

just my 2 cents :-)

And I am desesperatly looking for 2001 Oddyssey from Kubrick but can't find it at any Futureshop even if its listed as in stock.

For 2001 I can find that anywhere at a great price. I watched it in Bluray and was extremely impressed with the very clear transfer. HD-DVD version is the exact same transfer, so it is worth getting.
